d78a9d No.32225

Let's dedicate this thread to Medieval and Byzantine art discussion, from roughly 400 to 1500.

A lot of people see those art forms as some kind of decadence of naturalistic antique art, a casualty of the "dark ages".

However, i find very interesting the fact that Byzantines made the choice to distance themselves from naturalistic representation.

A common misconception is also that Renaissance (15th and early 16th century) is THE re-discovery of antique art, but middle-ages also knew little renaissances, during carolingian and romanesque (sry if bad translation) times. Look at the naturalism of the folds and the expressiveness of the characters in that sculpture for example. We are far from any kind of hieratism there.

Also, a lot of roman/greek features were conserved, a good example is the Corinthian style column that we can find through different medieval architectures styles.

Why can't architecture be like this nowadays. Also, that third pic. Goddamn.

What happened to that woman's face? The kid's smiling confusedly, no doubt thinking what am I looking at?

As I don't know how to tell what artwork belongs in what period I'll just post one.

Just look at the guys costume, it's 18th century (at least) without a doubt, it's likely to be a neo-classicist painting, judging by the themes depicted (antique stuff, focus on perspective and architecture)

I don't know, I find their faces very expressive, maybe it's because they are a bit stylized

Tbh here is another gothic sculpture, I really like those kind of slanted eyes their virgins have, it really makes them have a warm smile, it gives a comforting impression

Have more architecture (byzantine and romanesque) btw

i would imagine that the gist of this video could be applied to architecture. might also be worth noting that most of the best ancient architecture were public works.

You realize modern art is great when you get to know it, really, the questionings about art nature behind it are very interesting. Anyway it's not the appropriate board to discuss that.

>>32334

tbh i can't respect the ones behind Byzantium fall. If Byzance wouldn't have been invaded by those petty crusaders, maybe it would have been strong enough to resist few centuries more. Who knows which kind of wonders they could have created then?

If you wanna deliver a message at least have the decency to deliver it in a beautiful way, and not with piss on the floor or white paintings, parodies also aren't that original either.
