I am by no means a professional historian, but I know a few ressources that could help you.

First, the Metropolitan Museum of Art currently has an exhibition about Kongo. There are quite a few artefacts that you can see online, some articles and so forth. The website also has a timeline of art history, you can consult the history of African art to have an overview of their collection. On "the collection online", you can aso search for specific items or techniques (sword, gun, pottery, metalwork, jewellery, gold) in order to have an idea as to what the items actualy looked like.

There is also the "Before They Pass Away" project, which is a photographer visiting tribes and making great pictures. The African or Island people tribes may give you great ideas of environments.

Besides, what I mean by unimpressive is that the Ethiopians don't really have a center. Mali has very powerful infantry and cavalry (despite the lack of the paladin upgrade), the Portoguese have blackpowder units with fucking pinpoint accuracy, and the Berbers have three fucking variants of horse archers and two variants of light cavalry.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has good archers, above-average siege, and Shotel Warriors that could probably be spammed if they didn't cost so much gold.

However, most Europeans have a sense of wanting to leave something behind, and lowering the standards to just living isn't really enough for most people. Once you established your lifeline, you move on to other things.
