Where can I find a decent account of the life of the prophet Muhammad? I found some history channel documentary on him but it felt like some propaganda making him out to be much more perfect than he really was, and then there's a bunch of people saying he's a murderer and a child molester (well technically he was the latter, but that was pretty common back then)

How did he actually manage to win battles so well when he used to be a merchant?

Basically it talks about what Muhammad said and did.

The Sealed Nectar is really good the writer explains the different stories and narrations of events

Can't go wrong with Ibn Ishaq's account of Muhammad. His biography of Muhammad is the earliest book on the topic and seems objective enough to cause some Muslims to raise issues with some of his less flattering accounts. Pick the book translated by Michael Edwardes, it's very well translated.

I'd say checking /Islam/ is also a good bet

I don't know whether asking faithful followers of Muhammad about historical facts would be the best of ideas. The board owner seems to be a fairly reasonable guy, but it's like asking a priest whether or not Jesus Christ really was the product of immaculate conception.

But the anons in /islam/ would still question the facts about Mohammed and, honestly, what's the worse that can happen? You can get a great documentary or you don't, you might as well try, anon. Keep us posted though.
