How the fuck did it take nearly three thousand years for people to learn that Mercury isn't a Panacea and will only fuck you up?

Like fucking seriously someone explain how the Idea even came into existence let alone STUCK when the people using it died extremely painful deaths? I seriously think that is probably the most embarrassing thing in the overall development in Humanity

As far as the Chinese "mercury = immortality" thing is concerned, consider that this is part of the traditional chinese medicine, where 90% of the (always extremely expensive) substances used act as viagra, and the other 10% kill you.

but these things happens, like the romans as an example, they knew the effects and causes of lead poisoning but still they made their

plumbing out of lead, because it was a cheaper malleable metal

Much as with Arsenic, I'd argue that many doctors believed the mercury would kill whatever disease the patient was suffering from before it would kill the patient himself. Consider it an ancient form of chemo therapy.

Occasionally, it does.

Conversely, mercury poisoning is fairly slow - if you don't try to swim in the stuff and then sunbathe next to it.

Remember, it's about concentration of vapours and at the time when mercury was used like that there were no problems with how to improve ventilation, more with how to decrease it. Terrariums without fresh air intake but with conditioners weren't invented yet.
