It is sad. Though I don't think I watched the channel before it became the Hitler channel; but even that stuff was better than the current programs they show. The show "Ancient Discoveries" is pretty good, but that's about it.
If you have access to the Smithsonian Channel, they have really good history programs and they often do specials on major events in history (e.g. The Battle of Waterloo, The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest). They also have a series called Secrets, and another called "Mystery Files", which 'investigates' some of the unknowns in history(e.g. the Turin Shroud, and the existence of Marco Polo, each covered in their respective shows.

Peer Review Thread[s]?
I was thinking, and I thought it might be a neat idea to have a thread, or threads, in which one could post something that they have written(i.e. research papers pertaining to historical topics) for others to evaluate and provide some feedback on it's accuracy, or things that could be changed.
Now this wouldn't be something like a 'write my essays for me' thread, but just a way to get feedback on a paper you've already completely written. Because I know I have several papers that I need to write this semester, and it would be cool to get some feedback before submitting it to the professor.
Anyone disagree/agree?

I'm not sure what you're wanting me to explain.
Are you wanting me to explain peaceful noninterventionism?
Peaceful noninterventionism is the philosophy of not waging aggressive wars of conquest, involving ourselves in entangling alliances, or meddling in the affairs of other nations. An outgrowth of this philosophy would be not getting involved in the North-South Vietnamese struggle, not getting involved in the North-South Korean struggle, not getting involved in the Israel-Palestine conflict, etc.
When applied to a grand strategy or total war game, this philosophy kind of defeats the purpose of the game. For example, when playing R2TW as Rome, it is entirely possible to avoid making alliances or client state treaties with any faction, and it is possible to simply sign non-aggression pacts and trade agreements with everyone. I can amass considerable amounts of wealth and improve the Italian peninsula totally, but I'm never fighting anyone. No-one declares war on me. It gets old after a while. From a perspective of playing a game, Ron Paul's philosophy is kind of lackluster.
But insofar as reality is concerned, I think it'd be great.

Seriously though, I don't think another true fascist state in Europe is a feasible thing in the foreseeable future, even with the enormous right-wing push created by the refugee crisis.
The closest thing I currently could see to a Fourth Reich outside of central Europe would be Russia if Putin decides to go full Anschluss with Ukraine, Georgia, etc. The cult of personality is already there, Putin's party more or less is the only one with actual power, and with the Nato states constantly doing their best to piss of Russia, it's no wonder that Russian nationalism is one the rise.
Of course, all of this would require Russia to cope with the economic sanctions it is currently facing, but in a way, they also strengthen Putin's position as the "Grand Leader" in that he can argue that the Jews (namely the American Jews) are behind it.

Does anyone know of any good books dealing with the Yugoslav Wars or general histories (I'm having the itch to learn about South American history in particular after beginning Exploration Fawcett, but also I'm interested in other places). For someone who has an interest in history, I sure feel like I don't know all that much about it.

I really miss the Hitler Channel. I have fond memories of coming home from school and plopping down for hours watching it. Everything started to go downhill around 2007 or so when Hunter Ellis took over Digging for the Truth and they started airing crap like Ice Road Truckers. After that I just gave up TV.

I can remember next to nothing about battles at all unless they've got distinguishing features that stick with me, otherwise they all just blend together. Part of it comes down to not being able to visualize them, so watching a documentary usually helps.

I don't think ice road truckers ever had anything related to history in it, that was back when deadliest catch was somehow popular so I guess they wanted their own cold weather shit. Also since I posted that, History2 is dead & got replaced with fucking Viceland, it's a channel dedicated to Vice news' shit. Now all that's left is History International, and I don't even get that channel.
The era of informative TV about history is dead, replaced with reality shows and shows about people doing their jobs. Here's a question, what is it about fucking reality tv & shit like pawn stars that people enjoy so much?

People enjoy seeing other people succeed so they themselves can imagine that they are that person rather than actually succeeding. People also enjoy seeing other people fail so that they can claim that the other people are bigger failures than they are and that they would have did a better job in the other person's situation.

I think their justification for it was that anything can be history, but even then its hard to spin a contemporary reality TV show as having any substantial history-related content. They were missing one of the main appealing points of their channel, which was that they didn't air crap like that.
>Also since I posted that, History2 is dead & got replaced with fucking Viceland, it's a channel dedicated to Vice news' shit. Now all that's left is History International, and I don't even get that channel.
I remember seeing commercials History International back in the day and wishing I had it. Considering what you said about History2 and how the History Channel itself is circling the drain, it makes me a bit doubtful of its quality nowadays, though.
>Here's a question, what is it about fucking reality tv & shit like pawn stars that people enjoy so much?
Joe Sixpack probably finds them more relatable than documentaries since they deal more with personal drama, with the benefit for the producers being how comparatively cheap they are to crank out.

Iron Kingdom by Christopher Clark is very good. A lot of people were mentioning it around the end of 2014. It's got an assload of notes and sources in it for anything else you find interesting.

Who was the Byzantine Emperor who left on vacation and more or less said "Fuck you guys, I'm not coming back." then sat around in white robes until he died, and what was his exact quote on the subject? It was something about never wishing to don the purple robes of a statesman ever again.
Some of what I think happened may be factually wrong, through my slanted interpretation of slanted information, slanted by passing years.

Seeing themselves as the rightful heirs to the Roman Empire (or rather, actually just as the Roman Empire continued), it didn't sit to well with the Byzantines that some barbarians who fucked up Rome just a few centuries ago suddenly claimed its legacy (and the papacy) for themselves, despite of the fact that their ancestors were one of the reason Rome fell in the first place.
