was the original intention of the founding fathers to have the United States be something similar to the Hellenic League, where the states had a much larger say in their own affairs, so long as they abided by the constitution and the bill of rights, and the federal governemnt was only there for defense purposes?

assuming this is correct, would it be incorrect to say that this changed with he civil war?

I think that the political disagreements that cropped up a few years later show that different individuals had different ideas. The founding fathers had different ideas of what they thought America should be.

Originally the bill of rights only applied to the Federal Government. States did not need to follow it.

well i mean yea, the civil war had been brewing since our inception. i believe the leading argument from the opposing sides were ">muh humanism" and ">muh states rights" and the only reason that ">muh states rights" won was because the south was the economic powerhouse at the time.

i guess i answered my own question.

There's even more to that, whether the United States would be a mercantile nation, an agrarian one, whether it should become closely linked with Europe, whether it should be friendly with France or Britain. Hell the constitution was written and 10 years later they were arguing what was meant by it.

Feds were yanks, antifeds were southerners. Hence the union vs. the confederacy. Though the confederacy lost conservatism has always remained, and that's tied up with an anti federalist view. Paleocons are the modern representation of antifeds. Pat Buchanan is a great example of that. Federalists are just a bunch of namby pambies.
