You can't just ask for a history of everything in detail in the last three hundred years, if so you can just pick up any general history book, have a look in the Resource Sticky and ask questions in the QTDDTOT thread for specifics.

Okay, let's not replace Britain because that's a huge shakeup of history, let's say your island is half the size of Ireland and to the west of France, South and West from Ireland. Now you can say that the French Empire colonised your country similarly to how Britain colonised Ireland (looks up books on this colonisation). Due to the Island being so close to France and also near Britain, it has probably seen its fair share of fighting throughout history and was probably a front during the Hundred Years War and later probably saw fighting during colonialism. Let's say that Britain loses the war to try and invade it around the same time that they lost control of the US. Instead of directly invading they spread liberal ideas throughout the island, inciting its Democratic Revolution. A democratic government is created, albeit a weak one, and the country's inhabitants and French garrisons secure the island. They have a strong military force on the island and begin training a larger one; as the island is a rich one they have gold and since the farmland and seas are prosperous they have a tall, strong people. This is where Britain sees an oppurtunity to invade and France also invades in order to protect its territory. This is where the war begins and your island manages to push out their forces as they underestimate your forces, huzzah, huzzah. Months go by and there is discontent due to French and British blockades around the island meaning that people have little clothes and luxury, the Provisional Government is doing little and it is believed they are corrupt.
