Has there ever been a non-Arab African civilization with writing on par with Phoenician or ancient Chinese writing?

The Nigerians had something close, but it seems to be closer to something like the runic alphabet than an actual system of writing.

I'm guessing you're talking about how the lines overlap and all that? I can't think of anything like that but when you look at Celtic writing post-Roman invasion it is very simple, based upon straight lines but was used for writing despite its simplicity.

>it seems to be closer to something like the runic alphabet than an actual system of writing

>runic alphabet

>not an actual system of writing

>not a sister script to the latin alphabet

>not a phoneme to glyph alphabetic writing system

what are you even doing on /his/

also Ge'ez is technically pre-Arab :^)

Besides hieroglyphs and derivates, assuming Egyptians weren't influenced by Sumerians?

The Dogon people have a system of symbols/pictographs for divination purposes, and some other groups have something similar. Not writing yet, but look at the Chinese.

Nsibidi is really curious, maybe it's an actual writing system, who knows.

>it seems to be closer to something like the runic alphabet than an actual system of writing.

What do you think runes were? Also Nsibidi is not even remotely an alphabet.

btw, Vai syllabary is certainly a native invention but it was clearly inspired by other writing systems (likely Cherokee syllabary, via freedmen who went to Liberia)

In my defense, OP asked

>Has there ever been a non-Arab African civilization with writing on par with Phoenician or ancient Chinese writing

Doesn't specify it have to be from Africa.

35b24a No.36213

You could say Tifnagh but that pretty much comes from Phoenician.
