Using a bit of custom css it's possible to replace the standard emoji characters (see: http://getemoji.com) with images hosted on imgur, such as :joeyface:

These can only be seen on the board default css, so if you don't wish to see the custom board emotes, you can switch to a board css of your choosing.

it doesnt matter if we have ones that arent used, honestly

emotes just replace emoji characters nobody uses except for reposting tumblr copypasta

and flags we still have slots for i think but it doesnt matter if we have a ton of unused ones because they're legit like 14 kb each
