This is a thread for anons to post advice and suggestions for how to safely keep in contact with other anons. Someone mentioned the use of throwaway email and so forth, and that is a good start, but it would be nice to come up with some ideas for standardized practices which we could share with newcomers.

Off you go!

Well, there's always Tox I guess. That could work though I've never used it so I'm not sure Just trying to think of something since this is the really tricky issue.

>Tox

Seems pretty good. Free, doesn't require an email to set up an account, easy group chat functionality. According to my processes it uses up less than half the power of Skype too.

74e7b9 No.70

So I just researched Tox, and it seems absolutely perfect for our purposes. I propose that anyone on /hope/ right now who wants to keep in touch with me and other /hope/fuls download it and then share their Tox IDs via cockmail or some other throwaway email. To those who don't know what Tox is, it's like the /tech/ version of Skype. It's free as in gratis and free as in freedom, it's apparently secure from everybody short of the NSA, and it's easy to download and use for any OS including a bunch of Linux distros and also mobile versions.

I'll be the first to put myself out there; if you want my Tox ID, send me an email and I'll include it in my reply.

I would probably not recommend Tox as your IPs are being directly shared with one another.

How about Jitsi from behind a proxy or VPN, or an IRC of the same (Slack?)?

Also christianprojects@airmail.cc is my throwaway email

>your IPs are being directly shared with one another

We're sharing a lot more than that through Tox, but I guess it's a slight danger.

>How about Jitsi from behind a proxy or VPN, or an IRC of the same (Slack?)?

If you would be so kind as to explain to us how to use proxies and/or VPNs and where to find good ones, it would certainly add another layer of security.

don't take this as definitive, but I think tox can now run over tor/thru a socks5 proxy if its set to TCP only mode.

not experienced with tox though; all this just comes from Google.

There is a groupbot that handles group chats for a few different boards. I don't know the /tech/ guy who set it up, but it might be worth looking into getting it on there. Also, I'll just run my tox id out there.

I would not trust Tox because it does not follow the all of guidelines from the https://www.eff.org/secure-messaging-scorecard

Another disclaimer is very private group conversations are not possible at the current day because of technical challenges.

For IM, follow this guide here:

https://theintercept.com/2015/07/14/communicating-secret-watched/#windowslinux

/!\ Use the Tor browser to make an account on literally any public chat service; they don't know who you are and your conversations.

After configuring Tor with Pidgin, you can make an account in pidgin's "create this new account on the server" option by putting any unique username and domain "jabber.otr.im" in.

Some Tips:

*Use a pseudonym for only Tor usage

*Don't connect to your account without Tor

*Use this account for this network and don't link with another community. Make a separate account

*Don't use Tor browser to log into personal accounts that could link back to you.

Greetings. /tech/ies here.

I know how to setup a groupbot chat Here is my Tox ID for anyone who would like to add me.

To join the groupchat i've setup, Add this groupbot:

And type, without commas: "invite 2 /hope/".

You should receive an invitation.

Note that Tox is still under development currently, which after some drama, has finally got a new breath. The groupchat is text only.

Nice! Just tested out joining the group chat, and it seems to work pretty well.

Before you start with anything radical, it would be a good idea to use HTTPS and edit the links in the stickies, announcement, etc., to use HTTPS.

Thanks, saw it on the chat.

I kinda hope this board takes off well to populate it.

I have taken the time to read through the guide in your link, and I feel that it would be best if you or any /tech/-minded anons lurking would make a wiki article on secure communications. Here is the link to hopewiki: http://65.29.84.33/index.php/Hopewiki (apologies for the shady-looking IP link, our web guy has yet to set up our domain yet)

I will follow the guide and attempt to contact you securely, torfriend. Then we may discuss protocols that would be reasonable to enforce (or perhaps merely recommend).

>>183

Added you and your robot. Though, I tried to connect to /hope/ today and it said the group does not exist.

>>186

It shows the depth of technical knowledge I have that I actually had to look up what HTTPS is. If it would make you and all the other /tech/ nerds more comfortable, I will go through all our links and https-ify them. Would you suggest that I make that a rule, or maybe advise anons to download https-everywhere or some such thing?

If anyone else has any more suggestions, email or Tox me. I am not sure what level of security it would be desirable to encourage here on /hope/, but I suppose safer is better than sorry.

74e7b9 No.190

>>189

I should add that when I initially created this thread, I was asking more about brainstorming ideas for preventing anons from being able to take advantage of or troll each other, since /hope/ plans to become something of a social network of anons. Though all of the suggestions so far are also sensible, and it is a good idea to make sure any communications have a secure base safe from prying eyes, as a lot of personal and potentially embarrassing info will no doubt be shared.

I added you as a buddy on Pidgin, anon. My username is either hiramoftyre12@xmpp.jp/anoymous, or fallingblock60…something. I'm really not sure. I have a username for pidgin and one for the jabber client, I guess? Maybe you can explain a little better how this all works after you add me back.

When groupchats are inactive the groupbot deletes it which is why it needs population. In Tox, groupchats are not consistent. Once the client restarts, groupchats are forgotten. This is a missing feature that JFreeman is working on.

And in light of this detail i have forgot to mention, the reason why i proposed Tox was because it is quite user friendly and simple. And with TPP on our doorstep we could communicate and share securely.

Hopefully toxcore will be updated with JFreeman's work soon.

the groupbot should have the groupchat back on.
