3b5300 No.1

Here's the beginning of a list of Lovecraftian entertainment out there. Feel free to add and change things around.

/tv/

1. Adaptations of Lovecraft's work

Re-Animator - An adaptation of “Herbert West – Re-Animator”

Dagon – Actually an adaptation of “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”, not “Dagon” despite the name.

From Beyond – An adaptation of “From Beyond”

Castle Freak – Inspired by “The Outsider”, but not a direct adaptation.

The Call of Cthulhu – direct adaptation – black & white / silent film

The Whisperer In the Dark - direct adaptation – black & white

Die Farbe - A German adaptation of “The Colour Out Of Space” - black & white

2. Films set in the same continuity/world as Lovecraft's works, but not adaptations (sequels, prequels etc.)

3. Films inspired by Lovecraft's work or films with a Lovecraftian feel to them, but no direct adaptations

In the Mouth of Madness

The Thing – Very Lovecraftian feel and themes: paranoia, madness, ancient aliens visiting earth, Antarctica, shape-shifting monstrosities and a bitter-sweet ending. Do not bother with the 2011 prequel/remake. It is shit.

Harbinger Down – A spiritual sequel to John Carpenter's “The Thing”.

Alien – Confirmed by Dan O'Bannon to be inspired by HPL.

Evil Dead – features 'the Necronomicon'

Event Horizon – Lovecraftian themes: science gone wrong, evil coming from beyond the known universe, madness, paranoia, bitter-sweet ending.

The Descent – Very “The Beast In The Cave”-ish.

The Cave – Somewhat similar to “The Descent”, only not as good and with CGI monsters.

The Tunnel – Also somewhat similar to “The Descent”, only set in a maze of underground tunnels under Melbourne instead of an unexplored cave system.

Pandorum – Great opening, but turns to shit when the female characters turns out to be Alice from “Resident Evil” thanks to Paul W. S. Anderson.

Hellboy – Some “Other Gods”-like being makes a brief appearance, but otherwise unrelated to Lovecraft's works.

Honey Boo Boo Child – Includes such Lovecraftian themes as cosmic horror, body horror, biological degeneration & madness. Recommended for high level cultists and the mentally insane only.

/mu/

Humanoids – The Companion

Ogham Waite and the Amphibian Jazz Band – Live at the Gilman House

Catacombs – In The Depths of R'lyeh (limited to 500 copies) Funeral doom metal

Catacombs – Echoes Through the Catacombs (limited to 500 copies – out of print?) Funeral doom metal

Ahab – their entire discography: The Call of the Wretched Sea (2006), The Divinity of Oceans (2009) & The Giant (2012) Funeral doom metal

/lit/

Everything written by HPL. Go for the versions edited by S.T. Joshi which contains explanatory notes.

Great stories for beginners:
* The Shadow Over Innsmouth
* The Colour Out Of Space
* The Rats In The Walls

Later…
* The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
* The Call Of Cthulhu
* At The Mountains of Madness

OTHER AUTHORS
August Derleth's Lovecraft stories – Abandon all hope all ye who enter here. You have been warned.

Guy de Maupassant's “The Horla” - a favourite of HPL. Clearly an inspiration for TCOC.

Edgar Alan Poe – HPL's favourite author and inspiration - “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”

Robert E. Howard's Conan for Lovecraftian references

ST Joshi: An H.P. Lovecraft Encyclopedia – info on HPL's stories, influences etc.

/tg/

The Call of Cthulhu

/v/

The Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth – An adaptation of TSOI with elements of TSOT. Great Lovecraftian atmosphere at first, but it unfortunately it turns into a mostly mindless FPS shooter. A planned sequel got canned.

Penumbra: Overture – Features a very Lovecraftian protagonist and no effective weapons. Funfact: the game's engine is named HPL

Penumbra: Black Plague – Arguably the best of the Penumbra series. No weapons at all in this one.

Penumbra: Requiem – If you liked the two previous ones, you should give this one a go, keep in mind tho that this is much more puzzle oriented than the two previous ones.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Probably the most frightening game you're likely to play. Also check out the (free) expansion pack “Justine”.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs – less interactive than A:TDD

(very likely) Soma – Developed by Frictional Games, creators of the Penumbra-trilogy and Amnesia

Alone In The Dark (series) – The originals are very much inspired by Lovecraft

Eternal Darkness

Fantastic post man. I'm embarrassed I've kind of neglected updating this board. Got busy with other stuff, and the other boards I'd made, and kind of let this one fall by the waste side. Your list is far more complete than what I was going to post. I was just going to link the lovecraft library and podcraft. Good shit man.

If you pop back around, I'm totally willing to share the pass with you. This board definitely deserves more love than I'm giving it. I do plan to slap together some banners this weekend though.

Tallyho!

Once we've compiled enough Lovecraftian media we could make a fancy infographic like they make on /tv/ & /mu/

Hopefully this board will attract other like-minded folks soon.
I also made a few possible banners – no text or logo on them though.

Grade A stuff!
I am here from the exodus, and I award myself another 8 lashings today because I just realized I've been scouring catalogs for months without knowing this place had specific boards set up by users.

Love me some HPL
Will go through the entire list and give feedback and things to possibly add to the list.

About the /mu/ section though
Any reason why "Darkest of the Hillside Thickets" isn't in there? Is it because they are pure pulp?
Also, the entire Quake1 Soundtrack. No seriously, give it a listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUfLJsujcjY&index=5&list=PL7846FCCB5B56B870
This link is to a playlist with what I think is the best song first. The piping ALWAYS resonated with me as something otherworldly.

Captains log : additional: I find "Beast in the Cave" to be an excellent starter for new HPLers.
It's how I got started and I haven't looked back since. That last sentence man. Aiaiai

Also, maybe an art section. Suggestions:
Zdzisław Beksiński
Ernst Fuchs
Hieronymus Bosch
Hans "Ruedi" Giger
Gustave Doré
Wayne Barlowe

They're pretty much perfect as is. Only real change to make was adding the board text. I made some others while I was at it. I'm split on how some of 'em turned out, but definitely want to use some of the others.

Great additions!
H.R. Giger should be on the list, also Henry Clews Jr., he was mentioned in the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast on one of the episodes (part 2 I think) covering TCOC.

Other authors: Algernon Blackwood - HPL's favourite story was “The Willows”

EC Comics also did an adaption of HPL's «The Thing on the Doorstep» - so did Alberto Breccia in 1973 according to Wikipedia.

The «Happy Tree Friends» episode «Read 'Em and Weep» features the Necronomicon (from Evil Dead): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTo_rKYdVlY

I'm digging it.

Some more HPL related films:
The Resurrected aka Shatterbrain – Directed by Dan O'Bannon (writer of «Alien»). An adapation of HPL's «The Case of Charles Dexter Ward». IMO one of the best films based on a HPL story – the scenes in Curwen's underground laboratory in particular are very well done and suspenseful. All practical effects.

Dreams in the Witch-House - Directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Ezra Godden (who also starred in Gordon's “Dagon”. Surprisingly good adapation.

Hemoglobin aka Bleeders – Written by Dan O'Bannon. Based on HPL'S “The Lurking Fear”

File: 1412744492017.jpg (41.07 KB, 400x558, 200:279, 444.jpg)

Society is for the majority of the film, completely horrible, and I wouldn't exactly call the ending "good" but it is most definitely disturbing and decidedly Lovecraftian in theme and nature and quite fucked up. Well, in honesty after I saw it with my girlfriend she smacked my arm when I suggested it was Lovecraftian because it's not exactly well-written or thought-provoking.

The ending sequence is worth looking up on youtube simply for how absolutely fucked it is. The plot centers on a boy who may or may not be adopted whose family may or may not be some other species pretending to be human, and may or may not have a giant, gory disgusting amorphous alien orgy where the rich quite literally eat the poor. Like I said, I'd recommend giving the ending a watch, but the rest of the film isn't really worth your time.

AM 1200 on the other hand is a short-film I can much more enthusiastically recommend watching. Again, Lovecraft inspired, but not based on a specific story. Without spoiling too much, a guy trying to get away is lured to a radio station broadcasting a call for help. Very tense, satisfying ending, and some pretty good acting:

I feel your pain, bro.
I want to see the uncut version get a blu-ray release with some bonus features.
I've searched far and wide for it now, and the only place that has it (on DVD) is Amazon; the cheapest one was $15.50 – the most expensive one $29.99!

Also, the DVD of Dagon in my country is really lacking in the bonus feature department. Would it be too much to add the commentary track from the US release?

I'm up to episode 13. Weird as fuck series, but I'm enjoying it so far. I tried listening to it a few months ago, but I clicked number five and was somewhat lost and confused.

It made more sense when I listened to it from the beginning. Still weird as fuck though.

This. Sounds like "Twin Peaks" on acid. I started on ep 1 and I'm still confused as fuck.
Still, when it comes to night-time radio, nothing can beat "The Deb of Night" for me.

Got the LibriVox audiobook of it: https://librivox.org/the-house-on-the-borderland-by-william-hope-hodgson/

Not that far in yet, but the chapter titles could not be more Lovecraftian: "The Thing in the Pit", "The Swine-Things", "The Subterranean Pit", "The Noise in the Night", "The Celestial Globes" & "The Thing From the Arena" etc., - I've got a good feeling about this.

I am most glad I can add to this list fellow cultists.

I offer up H.P. Lovecraft's: Necronomicon, original title Necronomicon, also called Necronomicon: Book of the Dead or Necronomicon: To Hell and Back. I saw it once when I was young and flipping channels late at night between it and something else. Had quite an impact I would say.

Also, Jeffrey Combs as H.P. Lovecraft looked a lot like Bruce Campbell.

Never heard of that one before, so I checked it out.

Some things I noticed:
Christophe Gans (“Le Pacte des loups” aka ”Brotherhood of the Wolf” & “Silent Hill”) directed part #1 “The Drowned”

One part of the soundtrack from “The Cold” segment, was just like “Blood Theme” from Dexter! Daniel Licht is credited as having done the soundtrack on this, so I guess he decided to re-use it for Dexter…

Nice thread.

3764b3 No.239

I always argue that The Blair Witch Project is very Lovecraftian.
Consider:

The setting is the rural northwest.
The protagonists are investigating folklore that they don't believe in.
The legend they're investigating involves colonial witchcraft.
They are menaced by an unseen malevolence that skews local space and drives them mad.

Another one for the list: Cast a deadly spell

The main protagonist is Lovecraft himself, though it is probably as far from Lovecraftian as you can get otherwise – it's a noire crime mystery with Germlins and magic in it.

Wouldn't recommend it other than to the most hardcore cultist, but it should be on the list.

If you go in expecting a dark, gloomy Lovecraft story, you'll be very disappointed.

'Die, Monster, Die!' is a very loose adaptation of HPL's 'The Colour Out of Space'

I thoroughly enjoyed this film - loved the matte paintings, the creature effects, the eerie atmosphere, and Boris Karloff was great as well.

It turns it into a radioactive mutant horror film, but it is definitively worth checking out.
