I added several subscriptions to DA last night and most of them pulled the artist and title tags from the site just fine. I had to shut down the computer with about 500 images still in the queue. When I started Hydrus just now it started importing the images but no tags.

Any ideas? I thought I might need to log in to the site in a browser to get some kind of IP-based cookie, but it hasn't worked.

Aha, you have stumbled on an odd undocumented limitation of DA, giphy and tumblr downloads–they don't remember tags of queued items through a reboot.

I had forgotten this was true. It was based on a compromise when I rewrote my downloader engine to persist through reboots, in that these sites produce tags at an inconvenient time in the search-download-import cycle, when I can't easily store them for later.

Unfortunately, you won't get tags for any of those queued items. Once your subscription is done syncing, you can semi-quickly recover by running a manual download that mirrors your subscription search with 'get tags even if file is already in db' checked. The client will queue up those files like normal, recognise that it previously downloaded each file in turn, and progressively add the tags to each 'already in db' file without having to make any more requests to DA.

Next time I extend the downloader engine, I will be able to fix this.

So if I sync 1000 files and they don't finish downloading then they won't get tagged? Is this true for all subscription types?

If so I'll start setting my subscriptions to smaller sync sizes.

For DA, giphy, or tumblr, yes. The other download types generate tags at the same time they download files, so they don't need to be remembered through a reboot.

If you do a lot of DA stuff, yeah, I think you want to set a smaller initial sync or just make sure your client stays on while that big initial sync completes. This is true of downloader pages as well–if you have 400 files queued up and still to be downloaded for DA, they will forget their tags if you reboot the client. Sorry!
