 No.842

I had a great week. I have expanded my native video rendering to support mp4/wmv/mkv, got video and gifs to work for Linux and OS X, fixed several issues with the autocomplete dropdown for all platforms, improved some important internal data-handling, generally cleaned code, and fixed a lot of small bugs.

There will be a lot to test, but the release should be as normal tomorrow.

You sure this is a good idea man? Playing video right in the display window just seems like a good way to crash it. I have a lot of videos in hydrus already that show the blank arrow and I just open them externally if I want to see them. They get mixed in with my image browsing all the time, and it would suck if Hydrus suddenly started trying to load and play them only to crash the browse session I have going.

Some of these videos contain crazy codecs and are many GB in size, and I just don't have faith that they can be handled gracefully outside of a real video player.

I am very interested to find out how it works for people, particularly for big files. I am planning to add options for default handling of files, so users can specifically say 'just show me a launch externally button for mp4s' or whatever–if this week's release leads to crashes, I will get that done asap.

I could even add options for 'if it is bigger than x MB, then don't try to render it natively'.
