I think I need advice, or guidance or tips or something. After the longest time of being almost certain that hypnosis could never work on me because I have trouble diverting my attention away from the speaker (more so when there are instructions that are harder to follow, or take me out of relaxing, like being told to breathe in while in the middle of comfortably breathing out), but I think I finally did it tonight. I was listening to the file, about a third of the way in and just sorta drifted a bit, thinking about whatever, and suddenly it was over. I was confused and surprised, thought I had somehow accidentally bumped my laptop and skipped to the end. I don't think I just fell asleep, didn't really feel like it.

Anyways, I kept trying. It was sorta alright the next time, but I didn't phase out until near the end, then tried again and couldn't at all. It got harder to "unfocus" again and all I could think was that I was giving myself a headache because I couldn't relax properly, couldn't find a comfortable way to lie back anymore, etc, and it just got worse.

My question for the people who do this regularly, now that I'm convinced (or at least persuaded) that this isn't just a big hoax with a bunch of people trying to trick themselves into thinking they lost control, how do you do it? For my whole life I've always been thinking, about this and that, it almost never stops and drives me nuts sometimes, I just want to take a break and let someone else think for me for a while.

I need advice on stuff like how often you can do it, preparations, when to try it, etc because now I think this has the potential to be more than just a passing experiment every now and then.

tl;dr

New to this, finally made a breakthrough, having trouble following through.

Your brain cannot stop thinking, it will think perpetually.

What instead you must do, is let those thoughts pass by. To let go of them - you don't banish them from your mind, just release your grip on either keeping or losing them.

As I like to put it:

Imagine, if you will, that you are holding your thoughts in your hand. You've got a firm grip on them, and they're not going anywhere - but now, you'd like to be rid of them, just for a while. If you try and crush them, try and squeeze them out of your fist, you'll just end up with an even better hold on them. Instead, try this: gently open that fist, releasing the tension in your hand, and let gravity, the natural way of things, take effect. Let your fingers uncurl and your hand relax open, and just… let go of those thoughts, and allow them to fall away, all on their own. I think that's a much easier way to go about it. Maybe some thoughts will still remain in the palm of your hand, but that's alright, too - you're no longer holding onto them, so you need not be concerned with that.

maybe you're one of the people who are unable to be hypnotised.

Different people have different susceptibilities and resistances to hypnosis. For me I didn't really have too much trouble starting out, but getting more into it I found that if my visual cortex was engaged (watching a video, or staring at something) as opposed to being isolated to all but audio was infinitely superior.

There are some videos that have spirals, optical illusions which sort of imprint themselves temporarily on your vision, so after long enough staring your eyes still see the spiral when you look away. I've found that those kinds of things, which help to immerse you in the experience, are the best. Think of it like vidya, if you play a game and are not immersed you will enjoy it less than if you are, regardless of the quality of the product itself.

With experience you'll understand better how you tend to enjoy these things. I used to only listen to files in bed, but found I'd actually fall asleep, so I just sit in my chair mostly now.

Also weed helps, but I can dig that most people ain't in to that shit.

If you drifted away with your own thoughts, you simply shifted hypnotist voice to the background level.

That was not guided hypnosis, that was self hypnosis, in other words you just hypnotized yourself not even being aware of that.

You was so very focused on something, and that something shifted your awareness of your environment away.

Good job.

Very good training session (also describing the process) is "Nikki Fatale - Adaptive Unconscious".

So, stop trying to relax, stop trying to unfocus, stop trying to do anything, just listen, nothing more is needed.

Also try listening at morning, this gives interesting results.

This session should help you (very good session IMO), listen at least few times.

Very good visualization from "Cara Institute of Advanced Hypnosis":

Next, search for Mistress Fiona Clearwater at youtube, her inductions also use visualization, very easy and simple.

And obviously use mp3 player, with your pager/phone/laptop/tv/neighbors off.

Try meditation.

The purpose of meditation is to clear your mind of thoughts. The first two stages of meditation are very similar to first two stages of hypnosis (at least for me). First you'll become free of thoughts and you will feel very light, bodyless, like you are dissolving into the air around you. at second stage you become even lighter, non-existent. If at first stage your head was free of thought, at second stage your head does not exist any more. If at first stage you were dissolving into the air around you, at second stage the air around doesn't exist.

Both feelings are absolutely great and are worth the time invested into training yourself to achieve them. Particularly when meditating, you'll find it extremely difficult to "let go" at first.

Hypnosis wise, if you find it hard not to think of anything, try focusing all your brain processing on what the tyst is saying. Say, if she says breathe out when you breathe in, you can make an effort to only think "I am breathing in but I got told to breathe out, I will slowly adjust my breathing to match what the tyst is saying, because I am listening to the tysts voice and following her suggestions."

Just by focusing on something like this, you will clear your head of any other thoughts that might crawl in ("I'm not doing it right", "it;s not working", "can I do somethign differently?" etc).

Over time you will find anchors that get you to a certain state and it will become very easy to get to the desired state by either recognising the anchor or making yourself focus on getting to the anchor.
