I'm up for this board in theory, but "ideas guy", really? We're using some bullshit stereotyped ultimately meaningless phrase to define the board and it's users?

How about video game conceptual development?

 No.4

You've gotta be able to make fun of yourself. However I do think "idea guy" is a semi valid stereotype, at some point everyone's an idea guy, someone with an idea, but no focus or consideration to constraints, and an idea thats not even fleshed out. By acknowledging that your an idea guy, you can move past that and grow to be a proper deisgner.

>However I do think "idea guy" is a semi valid stereotype
Then you shouldn't be running this board. If you buy into the bullshit "idea guy" stereotype then you have zero respect for the majority of people who you want to post here.

Let me explain how it works. Lots of people have ideas for computer games, some might talk about it to friends, some might talk about it online (where some self-righteous faggots will probably flame them for daring to have an idea) but in the end it's just an idea. But that idea might inspire one person to take up programming, or perhaps do some 3d modelling, or whatever. Some might even go on to make the game in full by themselves. The idea that idea guy is a fag and programmer guy is some uber kewl amazing alpha bro is pure and utter faggotry, look at the shit games that actually get made, depression quest, Halo..
A computer game is a sum of its parts. And an idea is the first and foremost part. Not everyone has the time or means to make a computer game, or learn coding, or buy gaymaker, but it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them having that idea in the first place. The ideas guy comes from some absolute beta faggots who know coding, or in most cases have used shit like sword n spellmaker or gaymaker one time, or even just modded a gay ass gun for Halo, and think 'wow I'm a supar important uber kewl games dev nao!'. No, they're faggots. Seriosuly I know so fucking many of them, and they are all faggots.

When I say "idea guy" I simply mean someone who has an initial idea and wants to take it further, wants to move past the stereotype. This is an area for someone who wants to expand upon it,seek help, and receive constructive criticism. Yes idea guy has many negative connotations due to many "self-righteous faggots" like mentioned. The root of the flaming is: Your person with a half formed idea for the next best thing, but then you don't take the time to actually form and shape it and just rely on buzzwords and "it'll be cool". This is a spot to say "Yes I'm an Idea Guy,heres my Idea, help me shape it" free from flamers and self important beta faggots. A positive zone to freely express your creativeness. Yes we're idea guys but lets show people what an idea guy can accomplish when they sit down and grind. "You've gotta be able to make fun of yourself." if you take haters to seriously your gonna have a bad time.

Ok, I take your point. I'm probably the quintessential "ideas guy" (in the reclaimed sense of the word!) so I'll be happy to stick around and put down some ideas, maybe help others. I also know a bit of coding. I started in Quickbasic many eons ago, then did some Visual Basic. Now my intention is to learn Java, so I can make Android Apps and games.

>I'm probably the quintessential "ideas guy"
I should expand on that somewhat, I mean I have ideas constantly, I sorta wish I didn't, because I get really excited about ideas but of course they always come to nothing because I don't have an entire studio to make it happen..

Cool Cool, I'm on a strict regimen of c++ and working my way through some android dev books.

For your ideas, I'd say write down the ones you think are really good/important,flesh them out for 30 minutes, that way if you ever get the talent or opportunity you have something to draw off of.

I thought the stereotype of someone who was an "idea guy" was someone who talked about having ideas all the time, but never took the time to flesh them out or apply them.

Someone who made a shitty mod or indie game isn't an idea guy. They moved past having an idea and made a product.

An idea guy has an idea. If he had a finished product, he'd be an artist, author, director, or designer/programmer.

Isn't this board for the philosophy/concept stage of development for a project?

 No.146

>>145

Yes, its pretty much for when you have that O moment of an idea, start scribbling down notes, and finally decide to A: flesh it out more. & B: get some peer review/feed back in a "safe" friendly zone from other idea guys and gamers

 No.148

Anyone who doesn't create a part of the product (art, music, programming) is an idea guy. Anyone who does shit-tier writing can also be classified as an idea guy, because they have an idea for the story but don't know how to write it properly.

Complaining about this is like complaining about being called a drawfag in a draw thread. Besides there's literally 0 idea guys who admit to being an idea guy, unless they embrace the label from the beginning.

Idea guys are useful when they put their nose to the grind, theres tons of ways they can be helpful and vital to the team, however it is easy for an idea guy to sperg out and not be helpful, everyone starts as an ideaguy , the real ideaguys know how to stay in scope, word their ideas, actually make gdds and in general learn from their past mistakes advance

I'd take an "ideasguy" who can come up with a creative idea, and slowly chisel away at it until its a workable idea, actually show mechanics vs "this would be cool if", balance stats, etc

 No.157

If you don't make something, you are a useless idea guy. If your story, or mechanics are made in a game, then you are not. How hard it is to understand?

Fucking Bagahagala in Banngladesh has ideas too, you could ask any random person and no matter how good their ideas are, it will only be taken seriously if someone applies them.

I thought of a beautiful world and game mechanics, but until I make them happen, no one gives a shit, as they are just ideas. Idea guy.

Yeah thats the general idea of an idea guy, but not what we're going for here, reread previous posts or the sticky if you're confused

 No.161

So, say I have ideas and I can go to meticiouls length to describe them (not talking about the story, but just design in general and all the little things down to how many milliseconds a process lasts and what sound should play when you press 'start') along with some very shitty concept art (can't really draw though).

Am I an autist or can I be of use to anyone? I had a programmer friend and helped with ideas and tweaking/testing on a game a couple people made for mobile, but at the moment I don't have anyone to communicate with.

Am I out of luck? I personally think that, sadly, game designers or whatever are not needed nowadays. However, both the artist and programmer always said that they aren't really good with coming up with stuff and detailing it and rather have my feedback and just execute it.

someone's gotta translate "mage casts fireball" into: single target x base damage, x cooldown, with x effect on y with z mana cost,3 second startup animation i frames, etc

As i see it an "ideaguy" becomes useful when they can not only come up with ideas that sound good, but also mechanics and numbers, that takes the guess work out of "what does massive fireball really mean"

There's also balancing, pacing, "fun testing",system design etc,etc I'd say thats the role of the ideaguy, You've gotta be able to design on both a macro vague level and a micro fine detailed level
