Welcome to /imgbc/! Here we talk about the the history of chans and the userbases they attract. Follow the global rules and try to stay on-topic.

Feel free to make some banners if you are up for it.

This thread will serve as a meta thread for anyone who wants to discuss things about this board in particular.

Here are a few resources on chan history:

Maybe dank meme boards as dank memes are a large part of board culture?

Alternative chansite general thread

During the exodus many anons were unsure of where to migrate. Luckily, Masterchan and, more importantly, 8chan managed to enter the limelight. Next time, should Hotwheels fail us, we might not be so lucky.

ITT:
Share links to alternative chansites, preferably with a brief summary about it and how good you think it is.

Example:
>massively populated chan with a long history and boards for lots of topics, but with no way to create your own boards
>it's a decent site but the moderation has gone downhill recently
>overall 6/10

I know right there's nothing wrong with tripcodes.

Identity is so relevant to most conversations it's a wonder anyone chooses to be anonymous at all

bbb90f No.394

>>393

>I know right there's nothing wrong with tripcodes.

Tripcodes, to many, are a spit in the face of anonymous culture. It is claiming an identity and history without merit. It is unwarranted self importance.

On /tg/ we don't mind name/tripfagging much because often times it's someone who has earned it. Someone who is making something or is well versed. Else-wise its a resident troll who is courteous enough to make filtering easy.

Other boards, those ingrained in chan culture proper, often only have two reasons to use trips. Confirming authenticity of source, or being a massive attention whore. Why the fuck should I care who you are? What makes your posts so much more important that they should be linked back to all the others from your person? You're doing yourself a disservice, as anyone who reads your post will know it was from your character and not anybody.

I'm not sure about you but I, and other anons I've seen comment on anon culture, ignore tripfags out of habit.

31bf19 No.407

>>394 then they would be retarded newfags.

Post content, not identity, you fucking retards

I swear that's why gamergays are such a failure, they're all newfaggots like that.

anyway, due to the fact the fastest horsefucker board here only has like 6000 posts, ponychan was full of cancer at the time, and 4/mlp/ is still compromised by Scruffy, all the commies lit off and built their own chan.

The only cancer you'll find here is sometimes russian newfags post nothing but pics from joyreactor which, like all faggory daggory russian sites spits its watermark all over the image even in the fucking EXIF

>>236 All the most cancerous tripfaggots have left for ponyville.us which is like DeviantTart in chan form.

They even get namefags that work on the show popping in from time to time, since it's nigh-impossible to ruse.

So many people name/tripfag that anonymous itself could technically count as a name. And no one ever changes, even as a joke, so they may as well be registered accounts.

>>274 Don't be such a fucking pussy faggot, get on the rabb.it and bunny hop'em into hell

Also onechan is still up but got taken over by a jew that loves his clickbux ads, so I'll spare everyone the aggravation of linking their new digs. It's similar to 5chan-ru in that you get "wait 5 seconds" ads for each and every image

What a massive failboat. It's basically anonib minus board creation.

I've always liked it despite it being slow. It had some nice things that other chans didn't have, though they usually don't last. For example, I remember them running their own torrent tracker before installgentoo and /mu/tracker were created.

I guess the comments about their elitism are coming from ultra-newfags, and I can sympathize with the 7channers in that regard. I wrote this in the same vein for a /cow/ thread on /pol/:

>Imagine you're at the movies with your friends. You have some in-jokes and you rib each other for fun. Then, someone approaches your group with the Encyclopedia Yourfriendsica. He has studied the banter. He pretends that he's been one of your friends all along, using your in-jokes–often incorrectly. When someone makes a joke in a weird way, he corrects him with the textbook definition of your in-joke.

>Eventually, more of them join your group. Eventually, your friends leave, and the group becomes a group of people impersonating your group of friends. The cycle continues indefinitely until the theater goes out of business.

I'm guessing that a relatively small group of people have stuck with them over the last nine years or so. A new, active user that nobody recognizes must stand out as much as a tripfag would to them.

ce9fb9 No.388

the site has way too many boards for how (in)active the userbase is (see: 4-ch)

some serious merging might possibly bring it back up to speed

3d4322 No.409

With all of the giant drama over Infinity-next and the switch from Vichan, I'm honestly quite worried if regular users on 8ch will eventually bleed out and run off to one of the many offshoots being advertised.

Hey. For the last two years I've been curating a 4chan history .doc. I've been hosting it in vyrd.net and bibanon since then. But a recent problem in vyrd has left me unable to post.

I think you may find the 4chan .doc interesting as it contains a full timeline of 4chan and a bunch of information including a historic summary and staff info.

But well, enough talking, have the link:

1.4.2 - https://mega.nz/#!UUcBHagL!OHYl4zArBKai7-QmaL2im_E4kzfrWuMef1cdjdOTAv8

I think it applies to the internet as a whole, tbh. Before social media I felt like I had a secret hiding place where I could go to where all people like me would congregate.

Using the internet today, in comparison, feels dirty? There is an absence of homeliness. I'm sure that the outcasts of society long for a tight-knit place that they could finally say they belong in. I'm just sad for the outcasts of the future, who will not be able to turn to the internet for solace…

You can find a secret website but it will never be truly insulated. The world changes together, ideas become different. The entire landscape shifts.

The magic formula to meme tapestry:

>Use Pinch and Spot Heal's generate-pattern to erase the eyes

>Create new layer

>For anons and pepes paint over the skin, don't worry if you can't see below

>Set layer to 'darken'

>Erase stuff outside the lines

>For wojack completely desaturate the skin

>Dodge highlights & burn shadows if things are still unclear

>Combine all layers

Lets talk about Futaba Channel, anons. Disregard that I'm using an image about 2channel.

For a long time, I've felt that Moot didn't bother learning the culture of Futaba when he tried cloning it. As each day passes, I happen to believe this more and more. There were some big mistakes like only having a single /b/(Boards that become too big on 2ch and 2chan get extra pages so they don't flood into other, offtopic boards) among other things.

With this in mind, I wanted to learn more about Futaba . 2ch also works, but Futaba is the imageboard with a culture closer to ours. Thank you.

I always wanted to do something like that, but also to track the flow of users. Sometimes I hear about these small chans and I just wonder where did the people from? Are they from a board that got deleted on 7chan? or are they ancient remnants of the numerous channology chans?

I was somewhat inspired by the history of the /cow/ userbase which has migrated 6 or 7 times.

My favorite part of chan culture is how much it reflects real life. All of these 'tribes' were born, merged, split, worship gods (wade davis, that cam chick, B.G.), and go to war. Luckily, unlike irl, all of this information is still attainable, if by a hefty effort.

Check out stuff from the guy who kickstarted 'a history of the empires of EVE'. He has faced similar problems of individual's memory and digital degradation as sites and archives go dark. You might find a trick or two to this archenetology.

I think I found this on /newspaper/. Best foundation. Been reading it on breaks at work, keep expecting (lacuna) to pop up. http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=3&nv=1&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=de&tl=en&u=http://per.vyrd.net/of/4chan%2520-%2520Summary%25201.4.1.docx&usg=ALkJrhiSa6U1SdyoX5P3YBM24rNu_ciV4Q
