My favorite part of chan culture is how much it reflects real life. All of these 'tribes' were born, merged, split, worship gods (wade davis, that cam chick, B.G.), and go to war. Luckily, unlike irl, all of this information is still attainable, if by a hefty effort.
Check out stuff from the guy who kickstarted 'a history of the empires of EVE'. He has faced similar problems of individual's memory and digital degradation as sites and archives go dark. You might find a trick or two to this archenetology.
