We could always just set up a history timeline of the chans with the start dates of chans and important happenings, we could even get /newspaper/ to help

I always wanted to do something like that, but also to track the flow of users. Sometimes I hear about these small chans and I just wonder where did the people from? Are they from a board that got deleted on 7chan? or are they ancient remnants of the numerous channology chans?

I was somewhat inspired by the history of the /cow/ userbase which has migrated 6 or 7 times.

My favorite part of chan culture is how much it reflects real life. All of these 'tribes' were born, merged, split, worship gods (wade davis, that cam chick, B.G.), and go to war. Luckily, unlike irl, all of this information is still attainable, if by a hefty effort.

Check out stuff from the guy who kickstarted 'a history of the empires of EVE'. He has faced similar problems of individual's memory and digital degradation as sites and archives go dark. You might find a trick or two to this archenetology.
