In my opinion cold showers have been pivotal to my self improvement thus far. Check out the link below(It explains the benefits better than I can).
Before you look at it though I should add the caveat that some of the sources for benefits are inconclusive and require further testing. For instance some use only a small group of people, while others are missing graphs and other data. Take everything with a grain of salt. With that said, with what they do have and from personal experience, it appears to be very promising, especially when it comes to self improvement.

My experience with cold showers has been a good one. Before I began I used to always be depressed. I'd always manage to push it back for a while but no matter what I'd almost always relapse, each time feeling worse than before because of the feeling of the inevitability of the depression. I posted a thread on /adv/ asking for help, I got the usual responses except this time someone told me to try cold showers. I tried it but instantly changed my mind when I went into the shower, being a bit skeptical I looked it up and got a bunch of articles similar to the one I posted(Although without sources), this intrigued me so I tried again. This went on and on and until eventually it became a daily routine.
Here are some of the changes I noticed in my daily life, some occurring straight after, while others occurred weeks after regular cold showers.
>Keep in mind they could be placebo or due to something else(I doubt this but keep it in mind)
>Straight after taking a cold shower I would feel very energised and sometimes even strangely happy.
>After weeks of consistent cold showersI was no longer depressed
Reduced anxiety(Not 100% about this one)
I was also able to handle stressful situations better, more in control of emotional reactions
Became more productive(This could be due to anything)
>Months afterDefinitely felt that I was more resilient to stress
Depression didn't relapse
Definite feeling that my anxiety was reduced

No.647

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think alternating from hot to cold has some benefits of its own. So really, if this is the way you want to do it, go for it.
I think one thing you might miss out on is the whole, facing discomfort element of taking cold showers that the video above outlined. From experience going from hot to cold was easier than going from completely dry to ice freezing cold. Not on the physical discomfort level but mentally it took much more mental gymnastics to go cold turkey. Even now I find myself hesitating sometimes before turning on the showerhead, whereas going from hot to cold was generally not problematic. It was just as uncomfortable but I didn't get as much mental resistance to going full cold.

I hate to be a downer, I think there are SOME benefits to cold showers like better cold resistance and healthier immune system but to be honest, and I'm trying at least to speak from experience, the reason your feeling better is because your punishing yourself. You feel bad about yourself and , after doing this, you've felt like you've atoned in some way and have more peace of mind. This is much better than cutting yourself etc ,and I'm not saying your on the same mental level as someone who does that, but you might want to consider psychologically what you have in common with people who do so, possible borderline tendencies, and see what treatments have helped them.
No.1053
>>1044I disagree, well for one the feeling better part is a physical response not a psychological one, don't remember the exact reason but it had something to do with the cold shock.
The reason why I think I mentally feel better is because I challenge myself and then even with the horrible discomfort I soldier it to the end. In other words, fight through the discomfort.

The little jolt from the cold may give you a little adrenaline boost but it will dissipate in time. Unless you need to plan out everything in the shower I really don't think it helps all that much. But I'm not going to argue with a placebo effect if it's cheaper than what you're doing already.

If you're not used to cold showers or have never taken them, I really would not start in winter. Or at the least I wouldn't start *full* cold in winter. I'd stick to slightly below luke warm. If you have any heart problems avoid going full hardcore cold. Just as a precaution.
If you are perfectly fine I'd recommend you go full cold. Now here is the thing, the cold shock for a first timer will be overwhelming. To reduce it's intensity it's important to learn to breath calmly. Force yourself to keep a steady breath. It usually lasts a minute, but you could cut that down with proper breathing.
Once the cold shock fades away the shower becomes bearable and it may actually feel good at this point. You won't be cold anymore and if you walk out in the open air you'll feel warm.
You will also feel like a fucking beast ready to take on the world.

No.4042
>>4039
After the cold shock is gone it's fair game, stay as long as you like. I'd say about 4-5 minutes total, maybe even less, several minutes would be okay. It stops being torture after the first minute and eventually you'll actually enjoy the feeling of cold water.
Your biggest challenge won't be the actual showering process. That's easy. It's the getting into the shower and turning it to full cold that you will find to be the biggest challenge.
Here's a word of advice, the longer you wait to turn it on, the more anxious you get. Get in, and straight away turn into full cold and prepare your anus. If you get in, and don't immediately turn it on, you'll start getting doubts and you'll start making excuses and there will be a lot of mental gymnastics. This is actually where the mental improvement comes into play. The feeling you get here along with all the excuses and doubt is similar to the feeling you get right before you face any uncomfortable situation, whether it be approaching a hot girl or [insert ballsy uncomfortable situation]. So in practice you're basically learning to condition yourself to discomfort. Being used to discomfort is an amazing skill and very useful!

Wow, just wow. I really liked it. Don't get me wrong, it was awful and I strugled all 4 minutes and didn't have any pleasant physical feelings. But I was glad that I forced myself to do it and after shower I discowered that I'm ot sleepy like at all. Ordinary half an hour after getting from bed I strugle with desire to return back to bed, but now in 5 minutes after getting up I am functional human bean, thanks to cold shower.

Why not just put your hands under running cold water and wet you body, specifically chest, back and thighs (biggest areas of you body), like before going into lake, sea or swimming pool. It's kinda common sense and this method should help you avoid any dangers of this type. You will make a bit of mess as floor will get wet, but that's not big problem.
Thoughts on this?

Ive been doing the hot shower followed by cold rinse for a few months and found no tangible benfit to my life. I tried the full cold shower a few times recently and found it a completely different experience. Even just the sense of accomplishment from getting into it stone cold is a good buzz. I feel mood elevated anfd alert for a good while after.
I have a problem though. I have mild dry skin problems (mainly affecting my scalp) and when I go full cold shower, about 10 minutes after getting out i feel incredibly itchy all over my body, particularly my legs. Its not soap residue (i dont use soap, only shampoo every couple of days). I also get a bit of a runny nose afterwards. I shower just before leaving for work and have to walk in the cool weather (UK). After a shower, i get dried and changed asap and drink hot water or tea. These issues are holding me back from doing it daily. Anyone else have similar issues? The itching thing is not uncommon. Something to do with histamine release in cold conditions. (I have hayfever and very mild asthma)

I noticed extremely cold showers give me an energetic rush and I think very hot showers made my hair start to recede slightly. But I'm afraid of messing up my sexual drive and I'm not sure what to do. I'm in relationship right now but even when I'm not, I want to feel horny and maximize my arousal/orgasm potential. Seriously, orgasms are like free heroine in your body and I want my dose at least once a week. Taking cold showers makes me numb to arousal and my penis shrinks. I don't want that
No.4345
Usually I give myself short 20-30 seconds extreme cold shocks in between washing myself with relatively warm water. I end the shower on a few seconds warm note. Am I ruining the effects?
I always understood it's the 20, 30 or 60 second shock that is important for the skin and the testosterone, the rest is unnecessary.

I'm not sure about the physical benefits, but for the mental gain of facing discomfort, you are probably missing out a bit. Going into a shower and turning it to full cold, cold turkey, takes a lot of mental gymnastics, and this is the part of the shower that in my opinion is the most important for the "getting used to discomfort" aspect of cold showers.
It's the part where you experience a lot of the excuses you normally encounter when facing your typical daily discomforts like "should I talk to that girl or not?". Cold showers are a safe avenue, without external consequences, where you could practice overcoming this excuse stage, on a day to day basis. It's the part where you learn it's better to jump right in and as soon as possible, rather than wait and let the anxiety build up among other things.
I've done both variation, from going full cold straight away to varying between hot/wam to cold and from my experience, it's easier for the latter, both mentally and physically.

This is a general outline of a horrifyingly good "life-hack" plan that will make people scared of how much your face changed for the better in one week. The idea is to exploit the fact your skin becomes like a modeling clay when you start shocking yourself with 100% cold thanks to the improved blood circulation and testosterone release, among other things.
1. Drink 3 cups of warm green tea before and after the cold shower. Drink it all day too
2. Take zinc supplement and eat cauliflower, broccoli, oysters, kale, spinach.
3. Smear honey on your face and do face yoga.
4. Less priority: Limit ejaculation to at least once a week, do a lot of muscle exercise.
These are some of the activities that have plenty of hidden synergies between each other. Without the cold showers, or once you get used to them, it will take 5000 times longer to improve your skin, so exploit this fact. It's a good time to work out too, but you won't get as much gains from cold showering as you will get from muscles around your face, your hair, and your skin.
Some general tips and ideas to research on your own. Still, it's a tip of an iceberg:
a bit complicated way of proper brewing of green tea, especially with 3x rebrewing
take zinc only at the evening
interaction between green tea catechins and the zinc
effect of green tea on the skin and the face fat
proper face yoga exercises - some work horrifyingly well and fast (like jawline defining with lower teeth exercise) and some are waste of time
additions to green tea like ginger than help to prevent you from getting sick from all the cold, although hot green tea and hot broccoli/kale/cauliflower soups are enough
no fap beyond one week is useless unless you have overstimulated dopamine receptors d2 or you're prone to placebo
by the way, if you have too high prolactin from fapping, it's a good time to reduce it to once a week and try megadose of very cheap vit b6 (not more than 1 week) and of course stop fapping too
because of the sweat on your face, and for the sake of muscles and other things, work out before the showers, then green tea, shower, green tea, shave after the shower and after shaving smear the honey, then eat protein rich food that isn't dairy
effects that certain foods have on your skin, things like how2 get protein without dairy, plenty of other synergies in diet, how to affect your skin without getting too much of female hormones at the same time (green tea, honey) as a lot of foods good for the skin have estrogens (eg. carrot, although you can still eat it, especially if you boil them whole for 20 min, and only then blend, eat 1 spoon of it every hour)
eat everything like this anyway, stretch out the meals, drink green tea all day every few hours, rebrew 3 times the same leaves and drink slow. the plan works especially well if you're a NEET
how to make facial masks with honey, green tea and other things in 10 seconds, when and how to put them without wasting time (eg. while shitting
meditation with binaurals, 10Hz sound waves are for beta endorphins release

After more than a month I can blast myself with 100% cold, 30 seconds later warm, then cold again.
When blasting with cold, there's something definitely happening in my body, some chemical processes related to hormones or smth. I feel quick bursts of various feelings, if I were to simplify them I'd say happiness and anger and it's worth experiencing for sure.
AFTER the freezing shower I feel comfortably warm, but not much else. During the cold shower I can do 40 squats in a row and my legs feel fine, while outside I give up after 15, which is also interesting.
I think cold showers don't do much after the shower, actually. It's a small boost if anything. I will DEFINITELY keep doing them, because the research confirm they can't really hurt you, they can either do nothing or help you. Well, that hot water makes you bald is certain, also they make you more immune to cold for sure.
I've also been investigating my libido lately. I read cold showers actually help the libido, but I doubt it. My penis shrinks so fucking bad it almost retracts inside my body, and it kinda stays like this. Do you guys blast your balls, perineum and ass with freezing water? I do, but not sure if I should.
I can control my no fap, I don't want to suppress it. I want to experience horniness and channel it in right places. The sexual energy is very important, it's the life force you're supposed to gather, control and channel, NOT condition your body to ignore it.

I've only been doing it for a few days and I can say my sex drive is MUCH more controllable. I would definitely say it's a good thing for me because before I would fap like 5 times a day and it would be really hard not to orgasm rather early during sex, but now I feel the urge to fap less and I can last a little bit longer which is very nice.

I see. So this is why my libido lowered lately.
I thought cold showers will help me and my manliness wake up. But it's actually the opposite, cold showers numb your passion, it's something a tibetan monk would do to gain more control. I don't want the repression because I'm already too calm and numb in life, I need expression.

I'd disagree, it doesn't numb the passion, it emphasizes it. Cold showers improve sperm performance and also improve testosterone.

I've been taking a cold shower for 10 minutes everyday for over a month now and I haven't developed an immunity to cold, or maybe my jackets not warm enough, either way I can't tell. Right now my feet are really cold. That was something I was most looking forward to. I remember when I first started I felt like I was on top of the world and could accomplish anything, my mood was greatly improved and I had such ambitions but I don't get that feeling anymore.
I do notice I don't have the urge to fap like I used to which is good because fapping everyday can't be good for you. I'm not gonna do nofap, that is the biggest bullshit, if you fap once every 7 days or so that's good enough.
I set my shower to the coldest, it's cold but maybe it could be colder. I don't know if it's possible to get it colder somehow. I'd really like to push myself in -5 celsius water.

Short for no shampoo. Washing all of the oil out of your hair and off your body on a regular basis makes your body respond by producing a lot more oil. No shampoo is the practice of going without shampoo for long enough that your scalp eventually returns to normal oil production levels. As I understand it there's a rough/kinda gross part in between quitting shampoo and your body adapting, but afterwards it's supposed to be really good for your hair. Healthy, looking good, that kind of shit. Never tried it or read too much about it though.
This concept is also very important for people struggling with acne. A lot of people go maximum cleansing mode and bombard their skin with all these cleaners and shit that dries their skin out. Unfortunately the body responds by producing even more oil, and the acne bacteria feeds on oil so it's a vicious cycle. This is why one of the best things you can do for your skin is using moisturizer regularly.
On topic, this is a part of why cold showers are so good for your skin. Hot water dries you the fuck out, and cold water doesn't.

I can confirm this. I also stopped using shampoo for about a year now and my hair looks better than ever, if I wash my hair with soap or shampoo then it gets very greasy again. I still get dandruff from time to time but not as bad as back when I was using those anti-dandruff shampoos.
Also, if you read up on the ingredients of what goes into the shampoo then why would anyone put those into their hair? Seriously guys.

I never use anything else, if you really must wash your hair with something, use a bit of soap on the mid-ends of your hair but don't rub it into your scalp.
