Hi /improve/, recently I was thinking to push forward my life. I mostly care about my mental development for now, so I was thinking to start reading some philosopher's works. I don't even know if that's good idea or where to start (but I heard that's good to know philosophic ideas). I didn't read many books - last one was few years ago.
I want to know if there's much of it and if I should read then where should I begin etc.
PS. I know some basic philosophies such as stoicism, but I'm eager to be reminded of them.

I'm going to be blunt. You're going to fail if you try to take on as much as the pic says all at once. Growth needs to be organic and done over time.

Also, anything that is in the self help book realm is only out to make money for itself. As for philosophical bullshit, it's just that, bullshit.

Yeah, it sounds nice, who wouldn't want to be a badass stoic like aurelius but in the end you make your own thing through your day to day interactions. All that will come from it is you being a sperg who tries to be all zen and shit.

Look people in the eye, say what your heart wants to say(within reason), and walk straight. Boom, made you're life 83.6% better.

I don't wanna be some master philosopher, but I thought that could be a good start to read some of philosopher's works - that wisdom won't be worthless I guess.
Honestly, I don't know where should I begin with improving myself. In fact my life is a mess and I'm surrounded with some bigger problems which can't be solved in just like few days. So I came to the conclusion that I can't be worried about them all the time and I should have started to do something for myself but have no idea what to do first.

That sounds like "just be yourself"
It hasn't worked for me in the past, which is why I'm trying to change myself here.

i loathe self help books and you should too. it is just a bunch of feel good bullshit that doesn't get you anywhere.

And you want to "improve" when you already have problems? Why don't you "improve" on those? You don't have forever you know. Fix your fucking problems first and then think about expanding or whatever. The guilt trip isn't worth it.

Honestly, make a goal list. It really helps to put things on paper. Everything you can think of. It's very obvious what's possible and what's not. Once you cut the bullshit out you'll be left with what's really important. Probably at the top will be whatever problems you have now.

Wildly succesful people are like lottery winners, and if you listen to their advice they'll tell you to buy tickets - i.e. they'll give you useless advice. Or at best they will give good advice, but advice that is not adapted for your local context.

So instead of listening to them, listen to the moderately succesful people that are all around you. If you have problems with women, maybe you have a buddy (or you know a guy whose friend's brother or something) that is a bit of casanova. A regular guy living in the same environment you do - but doing it better. Ask him how he does it. Watch him and emulate.

That casanova guy, maybe he is shit in other respects. Like maybe his career isn't on the right track. What then? Well, there is no need to copy him completely, flaws and all. So you find another guy. One with an amazing career. And do same thing with that.

Ok maybe I exaggerated a little but still.
