Sup /improve/.

Going to a counselor for the first time tomorrow, never been, what should I expect?

Of course all counselors are different, so I will take any replies with a grain of salt, but I'm looking for just the basics.

Brief backstory on myself: I've been in a bad place for a few years with depression, self-esteem, and trust issues stemming from childhood abuse. My weight's gone up by about 50 pounds in 5 years and I'm addicted to smoking weed. I want to make a change in my life.

What am I looking for?

How difficult can it be to open up to a therapist?

How open am I expected to be? Stupid question, I know, but I don't want to get into some dark shit and cross a line if that's at all possible.

At a minimum you should tell your counsellor what problem you have. Have you have tried to tackle it. What is holding back your progress. Shit like that.

In regards to opening up, here are a few things that worked for me.

>Write things you want to talk about before the therapy session

This is one of the easiest ways to overcome your fear or inability to share things you want to overcome or tackle. Keep a journal with all the topics you find important and all the things that are bothering you, if you find it difficult to express your feelings in speech, just hand him/her the journal.
>Prepare for each session
>Reset your expectations
Just remember you are not there to tell an interesting story or spend an hour talking non stop, don't forget the reason you are going to therapy
>Let the therapist guide you
It is their job at the end of the day, they may not give you the answers but they will lead you in the right direction

As for what to expect, it's pretty different so my experience with it will probably not apply to you. I've had two counselors in my life and both had different approaches.

I recommend you open up as much as possible(Assuming it is relevant to why you're there). If you have crazy thoughts, I'd tone it down a bit but other than that.. Just let it all go.
