Do you /improve/ yourself in a scientific manner?

I did recently and made an interesting finding. Here is my story

>Be slightly overweight, BMI=25.something

>Slowly but steadily gaining weight
>Wonder why
>Fast for one day, except chewing sugar free gum (total calorie consumption about 100kCal)
>Lose weight as expected
>Slowly change things until weightloss stops
>Start eating, but eat healthily, never completely full
>Still losing weight (less quickly though lol)
>Did the sorbitol in the gum cause the weightloss? Stop chewing them.
>Still losing weight
>Was the problem that I overate? Start eating until completely full
>Still losing weight
>Was it because I sometimes replaced meals with candy and snacks? Start eating candy and snacks again.
>Still losing weight
>Was it maybe all the sandwiches I ate out of boredom? Start eating sandwiches again
>Start gaining weight

The culprit is found, and I now know how to lose weight without going hungry or foregoing candy. Great success. Have you ever done anything similar?

Yeah, far more scientific than that. I'm reducing bodyfat without losing much weight. Bodyfat is the only value you should care about anyway. You can be overweight like me, but stil be lean. At 15 % bodyfat, which is below what is considered normal/average, I'd be near being "obese" according to BMI. In my current state, I'm in normal range of bodyfat, but overweight according to BMI. I'm above average FFMI.

Lesson to be learned? BMI is a bad measure.

You should count your daily calorie consumption to come to a better conclusion.

That's certainly one way to do it. But rather than choosing a meal plan and sticking to it, I now eat whenever I feel like it. And that is a style of eating I vastly prefer.

When using that style, food are not just a number of calories. They are also more or less satiating. And more or less prone to being eaten when at a given level of hunger. Formulated in terms of calories, what I found was basically that when eating sandwiches, for one reason or another, my calory intake went up.

BMI is a good measure when you're dealing in large populations. People tend to misunderstand it but BMI as a measure was never intended for use by individuals, but to be used for large groups or populations.

On an individual level, BMI is inaccurate. Lots of muscle, lots of fat, unusual heights, and other things throw it off. But it's fine when dealing with aggregates.
