I think it's because when you don't say as much their mind fills in the details, which makes it more realistic to them. Also if you give a detailed story, rather than just simply saying what you did, it might sound like yo're trying to prove something.
OP if you're going to lie in interviews I'd consider what the employer wants and doesn't want. Think of what you might be asked and come up with ideal answers, then skew it to ft yourself more so it doesn't sound cookie-cutter. If you need a full story, consider the situation and come up with something believable, I suppose. Writing down the false information will probably help you to quickly remember it. If there's something you think you'll need to know, do some research.
