A recent trend, however, has been to add the black and pardo populations to claim Brazil is "black-majority" (pardo bitching organizations rightfully point this is erasure, but they're too small and nobody gives a fuck about them). By the same criteria, you could add the white and pardo populations to claim Brazil is "white-majority". The left will always bitch. Nowadays they even say there's an ongoing "black genocide" led by the police.
And then you have to consider most "pure whites" and "pure blacks" are actually mixed, and the actual demographics would be something like 90% pardo.

Well, it's your (and my) ancestors who took the strategic decision to only use these vast swathes of fertile land as resource extraction grounds and nothing else, bringing next to no white women, bringing gigantic numbers of slaves and screwing native and black women to compensate. Massive white immigration from the 19th century onwards compensated this, but not enough to become a white country.
In a situation where white women are scarce, screwing nonwhites and applying hyperdescent is a form of maximizing whiteness.
You could've brought more white women, but then you'd end at best with a whiter South Africa unless the slave influx was reduced.
This, of course, would require a different set of strategic decisions on colonization, and the ambition of actually creating a paralell society across the pond like the English did instead of just sending a few settlers and hoping gold and sugar come back.
Another important fact is that, until the early 20th century, Brazilians actively cared about becoming more European and whites were becoming a larger fraction of the population. Nationalism, fascists, modernists, leftists and intellectuals in general killed this idea, created Brazil's nonwhite identity (mostly artificial: stupidities such as Carnival are recent inventions) and enshrined pardo-ness as the national spirity.
