Actually, Qatar is an island. The reason that it doesn't look like an island anymore is that the sea level has lowered, but very recently it was still an island. The exact time is not known but it generally is thought to be thousands of years ago. However, I know from personal experience that it has been an island much more recently than this. You see, I too have a mandela. The Arabian peninsula was very different, the Red Sea was larger, even the mountains were more impressive. There was more fertile land, there were more rivers, and the national borders were different. There were also more countries that are now gone. The Sahara however was much more vast, but Egypt was mostly not desert. I share some of OP's mandelas: Egypt and Ethiopia had a common border, Israel and Saudi Arabia had a border, Syria and Iran had a border, south half of Jordan was part of Israel inhabited by Jews, etc… I have travelled to Qatar many many times, before last year it was always an island. If it wasn't an island, then why did we go with a ferry?

There were also many more differences in the dialects. I clearly remember when I first went to Qatar, I laughed hard at their speech. They'd say /ɜssæːʎʊːm ɜʎæːkʊːm/ for السلام عليكم and /æʎæː/ for الله and they used strange words like لحم "meat" for all food including salad which they pronounced in a weird way like /ʎæɰm/ or /ʎæːɥm/… I haven't been to Qatar since my mandela but I've met people from there and none of them spoke like that… I also remember that Bahrainis said /ola/ as a greeting like in Spanish and they thought I was Jewish, and still people think I'm Jewish sometimes. But I haven't met anyone from Bahrain since so I'm not sure if they still and/or actually say that. What has happened? What is it with all these mandelas?
