Modern day Assyrians are the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians, therefore Sumerians/Akkadians. Babylon was always extremely multicultural, so Sumerian DNA is shared by a lot of people. South Iraq Sabians, Mandeans and Marsh Arabs still have some old Sumerian/Babylonian tradition, but are descended from the old Chaldeans (modern Chaldeans are Assyrian Catholics in denial).

This is a minority though. The majority of all the Sumerians vanished without a trace, at the height of Sumer the population was 15 million and growing but most of them disappeared into seemingly thin air and people now say that at the height it was only 15 thousand if even that, but I don't remember the exact numbers, but I know that Sumerians had at least 15 million that vanished without a trace.

it's cultural. they don't "go" anywhere, they stay where they are. we happen to group them into "Sumerian" culture of "Babylonian" culture. but in reality all those cultures just progressed and evolved. it wasn't usually the case of a whole new people coming in and taking over out of nowhere, and the other people mysteriously vanishing. also dont forget as past empires crumbled and new empires rose, the people working as soldiers, officers, official positions etc. in the past empire would continue as the new empire took over. you have to leave your modern concept of invasion and occupation. back then it could be weeks between traveling to different towns, so everyone was much more isolated.
