>I really don't see anything that sets this site apart from 7chan really
It's pretty clear what sets 8ch apart from other chans (user owned boards/singular global rule). 7chan was notorious for it's strict moderation while 8ch has none globally outside of removal of CP, so any community can come here and establish a board while anyone deemed cancerous wasn't allowed on 7chan.
In practice anons here try to drive out various undesirables and stop them from establishing boards but all inclusive is pretty much the idea behind the site. And in regards to groups that are common on chans/compatible with the dominant culture the notion works (>/hga/, /monster/, /christian/, /egy/, /kind/, etc).
>The site isn't really even growing anymore at the rate it was back in September, it's simply just floundering
http://stats.4ch.net/8chan/allboards.php
8ch went through two main periods of growth. The initial exodus in September (which led into a pretty steep downward slope following that) and another more minor growth period at the start of the year surrounding moot's resignation, /baph/ and DDOS related happenings, etc. Since the beginning of the year the site has been stable. Every now and then there are smaller migrations - /hga/ came over from 4chan's /b/ a couple weeks ago and /monster/ (which has been around for ages) grew significantly and absorbed users from /mgg/ in 4/a/+4/jp/ a few months back. Don't know if /hga/ will stay around long term though.
Considering we're stable at ~500k PPW and have infinity next on the horizion to look forward to (>multiboards/overboard to help small boards, better optimized in general) I'm pretty happy with how the site is doing. I see the improvements that infinity next will bring, and allow Hotman/Josh to implement, helping to grow the site as well.
>Also it's pretty funny that 5/6 of the entire population of /irc/ is in this thread, and 3 of them are pro-4chan
>it's surprising that anons which have been discussing 4chan for 5 months like the website
Le shiggy diggy. With that being said I'm not pro-4chan though, the only trajectory I see that website heading is down. The cancer has established itself across a lot of the larger boards, many boards have regular issues with moderation, the rule base is growing ever more restrictive, never any new features/boards, no transparency regarding administration (do you even know who runs 4chan now?), and at this stage most of the large boards are just containment zones for babby's-first-imageboard-tier normalfags.
