Hello,
I am an American New Yorker who is going to make Aliyah within the next few years. I want to go to the Negev (for landscape, culture and economic benefits), but if you have any other suggestions for where I should move to? (I have only been to Tel Aviv before)
I am taking an ulpan beginning next month, but the language is not easy, any advice for that? Also, please tell me about IDF service

the Negev really is a beautiful place, but i wouldn't know anything about starting there from scratch.
generally you want to stay away from central cities like Tel Aviv because apartments cost a fortune (just like everything else).
now about the IDF service:
IIRC if you are below the age of 40-ish you will need to get your ass conscripted, though if you are quite mature I find it hard to imagine they'll force you to serve with a bunch of 18 year olds, so they must have some kind of special arrangement.
The Hebrew language is considered one of the simpler ones, really my only tip is indulge yourself in as much Hebrew as possible (literature, media, etc.)
god speed and good luck.
