I hope it helped, even just a little.
All I can say is we have the traditional custom but it's getting less popular.

As for the religion, I'm buddist but I don't participate in any events.
>As long as people don't bother me or others through their actions they can be as religious as they want
I agree. I respect whatever they believe, as long as they leave me alone.

>The tax you were speaking about is 消費税?

Yes, 消費税 in Japan is 8% now, but they're talking about raising it up to 10%.
19% seems pretty high. Do you have reduced sales(consumption)tax rates for daily necessities?

I've never heard of アーヘン so I googled it.
Aachen seems quite a nice city. You have many historical buildings there. Aachen Cathedral(Aachener Dom in German, right?) looks magnificient.
Aachen is very close to Belgium and Netherlands, isn't it? Do you visit those two countries?

タンデムパートナー is somehting like language exchange partner, I guess.

Bty I found a site like this:
タンデム紹介 - 日独協会
www.jdg.or.jp/tandem

>Oh and congratulations Japan!

Thank you. 山崎is very expensive but とても美味しいです - that's what I heard anyway.

What is role of religion in Japanese society?

> Do you have reduced sales(consumption)tax rates for daily necessities?

Yes, normal rate is 19% but for some things we only pay 7%. This is the law text (in German): http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/ustg_1980/__12.html
Most food for example is only 7%.

>You have many historical buildings there.

Yeah, well, some at least. I live directly next to the Dom, it's pretty small compared to Cologne.

>Aachen is very close to Belgium and Netherlands, isn't it?

Yes, you can get with bicycle to Netherlands and Belgium in <30 minutes. Normally I don't go there, though. Well, Netherlands would be interesting because of marijuana but you can't really take it back easily to Germany, they control.

>>938
Hmm… I normally don't watch drama or anime, but I guess it'd be fine. Also music and news I'd like to watch.
Yes I'm in Germany currently, I use a P2P program to watch. It's called NIJI, I think it's from China. I can watch all the channels you see on the screenshot, it works really well and fast. Quality is not very high, but it's alright.

>What is role of religion in Japanese society?
That's a tough question. I'm a buddist but that doesn't affect my daily life at all.
When we lose someone in the family and have to hold a funeral, we become aware of our religion, as the funeral has to be done by the rule of your religion.
This might interest you;
How important a role does religion play in Japanese society?

Well it's not so bad then. Our government wouldn't introduce reduced sales tax rates.

This is today's TV program. You can read ニュース(news), can't you? It seems no music program on TV today.

So you smoke marijuana, right? I'm not so surprised to hear that. In America they've changed the law, it's not illegal to smoke marijuana(they call it pot I think)in more than 20 states.
We have very strict law aginst marijuana or any sort of drug. I don't think they're going to change that.

Thanks for the TV guide, I'll use that to find something I like. I can read/listen fairly well, so that's no problem.

Also about marijuana, it's not that I consume it regularly. I just think there's no reason to ban it, as it's less addicting and less dangerous than nicotin or alcohol, which are both allowed in our society. I frankly just don't see the point in banning it, especially when countries like Netherlands allow consume since many years and it isn't a problem for anyone. But, personally I don't think I'd use it often, even if it would be allowed. My only weak point is beer. I like beer way too much to the point where I drink a bottle every evening. But beer is very accepted in society, so no one is blaming me for that. How are drugs perceived in Japanese society? I heard laws are very strict against illegal drugs, but alcohol and cigarettes are very popular. Is it normal to try hard drugs at some point in your life? (For example when I was a teen ager we tried many different things, nothing really dangerous like heroin, but different herbs/salvia/mushrooms etc. but that was only to have fun once and try things out, today I would not do this again). Also do some kind of drugs play a part in tradition? For example wine is a central part in christian culture, and I think some kind of mushrooms are important for shamanic rituals in Africa or South America etc.–is there something similar in Japanese culture?

I saw people here are wondering if there's a limit of posts(text and image) per thread, so I sent an email to Hotwheels san regarding the topic.
Here's the reply from him.

”There is no limit. However, threads expire. The bump limit is 250 posts. After 250 posts, a thread can no longer be bumped anymore.

If a thread is stickied, however, it can get an infinite number of replies. This is quite annoying however, because big threads are slow to load in one’s browser. So, I recommend creating new threads after 250 posts. Thanks for using 8chan!”

Although I've heard the auther's name, I've never read his novel. I guess it was famous back then, not many people know about the novel and its consequences.
Apparently the short story was controversial, caused a big argument between those who wanted to protect freedom of speech and those who claimed it was an insult to the Emperor and the imperial family. It went so far, a 17yrs old right-wing boy killed the publisher's housemaid, stabbed the publisher's wife. The auther dissapeared after the incident, because he felt responsible for the tragedy. The novel has not been published for a long time, but you can read it now(e.g. Amazon kindle)

>is it normal to try hard drugs at some point in your life?

When we have event of cereblation, we drink sake, but sake is not drug.

 No.964

>>960

Hm, I thought as much, but it's interesting how different it is compared to here. While we also have laws against recreational drug use (except of course alcohol and tobacco/nicotine) you are not regarded as an addict or a criminal by other people if you just try it once (of course always depends on the drug itself).

If you look at this chart (or the table below): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Development_of_a_rational_scale_to_assess_the_harm_of_drugs_of_potential_misuse_%28physical_harm_and_dependence,_NA_free_means%29.svg?uselang=ja
You can see how addicting a certain drug is and how much it can physically harm you. Most people try some of the yellow or orange-colored substances at some point during their life, and don't have any problems with it. Not saying I condone or despise this.

>When we have event of cereblation, we drink sake, but sake is not drug.

Sake is an alcoholic beverage, alcohol (well, ethanol in this case) is a drug. However it is of course completely legal to consume in almost any country. It does next to no harm if you don't consume too much of it.

My personal stance on the topic is that legislation makers should base laws more on scientific facts, and less on social norms.

敬語 a term of respect for the person or thing referred to.
There are 3 kinds of 敬語(to be specific, there are 5 kinds)

尊敬語 honorific expression(words)
by usuing words which mean directly admire(honor) someone, you can show your respect for him/her

謙譲語 modest expression(words)
by usuing humble expression(putting yourself in lower position than someone), you can show your respect for him/her

丁寧語 polite expression(words)
put ~です ~ます at the end of the sentence

see(見る) 尊敬語 ご覧になる

read(読む) 尊敬語 お読みになる

say(言う) 尊敬語 おっしゃる

He says

So, if you want to say 見ていません as kenjougo, I recommend you to say "拝見していません"

Actually, you are the only one who said "thanks"to me, which was kind of you.
Yeah, Hotwheels san seems to like the word "however" a lot. He was quite nice though, I received the reply within 20min. after I sent him the email.

It didn't surprise me to hear you occasionaly try recreational drug, as I spent a few years overseas and people told me teenagers' use of drugs and stuff.

>My personal stance on the topic is that legislation makers should base laws more on scientific facts, and less on social norms

Yes, I agree. The problem is though, what motivates politicians? Money, I think.

In Japan people under 20 are prohibited to drink or smoke by law. As you can see, almost every convenience store has the touch panel. Those who want to buy alcohol or cigarette have to touch the panel to admit that they're over 20.

You said you can read/write fairly well.
I've posted >>983 & >>998 regarding to Keigo.
I used to have textbooks of how to teach Japanese language to foreiners, as I used to teach(only a part time) I looked for the textbooks, but couldn't find any. I must have thrown them away when I moved out.
Without the textbooks it was not easy how to explain about keigo, especially I didn't want to give them wrong information.
It is hardly enough info, but I put some efforts and time in there, although nobody seem to care.

If that helps you in any way, I'd be very happy, as those would be one of my last postings.

Take care of yourself, ok?

>Yeah, Hotwheels san seems to like the word "however" a lot.
Haha right! I only noticed it now.

>As you can see, almost every convenience store has the touch panel.

Interesting, never heard of that panel before. They just ask for your ID here and you show the clerk, but of course being 18 years old is enough for anything you want to buy (and if you only want beer/wine etc. 16 years is enough). So even though I'm only 20 years old myself, they never really ask me, I guess I look old enough.

>as I used to teach(only a part time)

Ah interesting. But yes it's hard to explain the own language and don't make mistakes. So for example for me I know what >>974 was saying (I was >>980, I was using a VPN for that post), but I didn't really know how to explain it, because I learned these words from listening mostly.
Well, I read both of your posts, and I'd like to thank you for taking your time to help us foreigners understand your language. While I personally didn't learn anything new, I'm sure there are some people here who can make good use of these. I hope you're not gone forever, but yeah, take care and I wish you the best.

>>976
Here is another explanation for some 敬語. It only covers basics and won't teach you everything there is to know about it (partly because it is a really big topic with much to learn), but I think if you understand everything on that page you won't be confused by polite or humble sentences anymore.
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/honorific
