As you can see Japanese sentences, many of such a long and complex sentence is made up of a few simple sentences with particle.
so I think it's quite important to repeat practicing to combine and correct simple sentences using particles for your writing, as well as vocabulary.
however it looks like your Japanese has lthe lack of particles.
therefore, you should memorise countless particles and learn how to use them, shouldn't you?

Good day m8s. I have been keeping a casual journal. I wonder if it's okay to submit an entry, to get feedback on my writing. The tone is meant to be vaguely conversational/informal. Also I can't hand-write all of those kanji. I have anonymised some names and locations. If anyone has any input, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers!

>その夕I don't know when you had dinner with your host family though, but I think その夜 or その晩 is better.
>携帯を何とかしないとならんその前に、携帯を何とかしないと

if you put 時間があれば ahead of the sentence, it sounds better

>Moderate understanding You know most grammar rules and just need to grind some more vocab. You might actually manage a regular conversation here with some difficulty if you don't have the atrocious accent that you probably have.
>Fluency You can speak the language with little difficulty but you are bound to come across words you don't know often enough. You also still have that accent and you need to clarify what you're trying to say here and there but you can still get by without many problems.
>Native level You know just about everything you need to know, very rarely come across a word you don't know and do not have (much of) an accent. Congrats
But this comes from someone who has never achieved fluency in any language. This is only what I've put together from my knowledge of the experience thus far and what other people have told me about their language learning experiences.

Yes we learn English in junior high & high school for 6 years.
Recently Japanese government started a new English education program, now kids in elementary school have English classes.
I know many Japanese say English is difficult, especially speaking, in my case I always liked English at school. Also I spent a few years overseas, during that time English was the only language I spoke 24hours a day.
So you learn Swedish and English at school, and you're also studying Japanese.

There are of course people who find it hard to learn two languages at once, but they usually have time to learn both in the end.
In Sweden you start learning English from the age of 7. It goes throughout primary- and secondary education, meaning to the age of 19. The secondary education is optional, but to complete it you require a certain amount of knowledge in both Swedish and English.
When I was younger I played a lot of video games, and those games were almost only in English. That's probably why I never had any problems learning the language.

As I said, it's not as bad as Melbourne. Adelaide's economy is pretty sluggish so there's not that much going on, and most of the really old buildings are heritage listed so we're not losing them. I don't even mind regular skyscrapers. I just think that the more pretentious, non-traditional "artistic" sorts of architecture can utterly ruin a cityscape regardless of how many nice old buildings are preserved. A few years ago there was an attempt to run a socialist development programme to convert to fibre optic, which would improve value in the long term, but would not do anything to decrease costs, and was especially costly in terms of reaching rural areas (which are otherwise likely doomed to poor service). That has mostly been called off with change in government.

Btw, you mentioned earlier that many Japanese find it diffucult to learn English, and I agreed with you.
Personally I think it would be much harder for the Europeans to learn Japanese language, especially reading and writing. You have to learn ひらがな、カタカナ、and 漢字 which is the hardest one.
Internet has become necessity in our lives, both at work and home. All you have to do is type the keyboard and select the right Kanji.
Yet there are times when handwriting is required, it's shocking to find out I've forgotten how to write kanji, at least in my case it is.

>This is wrong. No, it isn't. Quite likely, the lower price is possible due to some kind of subsidy that's still having an effect, or because the area has greater population density and the cost per person is lower (i.e. it wouldn't be cheaper in your current area), or some other reason. Fibre optic cables are inherently materally more expensive than the older technology, and in the short-term there would also have been installation costs. Probably a lot of the bill was footed by the government, i.e. the public at large, i.e. socialised. That's why it would be "cheaper" - consider, if it had been so economically fantastic on its own, why would there have been any need for intervention to promote it? Companies could have done it themselves and made higher profits, if it's a service for which they can afford, but do not have, to charge half the rates.

It was initially FTTH, with other solutions like satellite for some rural areas. That was when Labor were in government.
The Coalition are now in government and Tony Abbott is opposed to the previous NBN. They are looking at building FTTN (Fibre To The Node).
Also, it is spelt 'fibre' in British English (and Australian) and fiber in US English, so you didn't spell it wrong.
I'm looking at moving from one suburb to another, much closer to the city.
>>780 Of course urban centres need connecting, just like Aus needs connecting to other countries. Just clarifying, likely for others in the thread rather than yourself, that our population density of ~3 people/km^2 doesn't reflect urbanisation of ~90% and the reality that much of the country is empty.
I did miss your first sentence which said the same thing.
The nbn plan covers any area that has fixed line nbn coverage, so it is not a matter of population density. It is the same price in my current suburb (if I lived in a street that has it). I live in higher density than average, so even at half price I'm likely subsidising others.
I interpret 'but would not do anything to decrease costs' as meaning for the end user, as of course in the short term it's going to be more expensive for the government or a telco than doing nothing.
TPG are doing it by their own at the moment, but sure, why would Telstra install something, at large cost, that reduces their revenue by half (at least for me) while providing a superior product? In the short term in that scenario it is impossible to make higher profits, as that one company, from me.

>>803 >for the end user But where does the government get its funding? Public spending does have costs for the average citizen and the total costs, long term, should be identical or greater (because of opportunity costs of decreased investment capital, lack of competition's downward push on prices, general economic sluggishness caused by taxation, and the great risks of expanding public debt), than if the project was entirely privately funded.
>why would TelstraMy point is that if there's a company that can afford to charge half their old fees, without government intervention, while delivering a superior service, then that means that their costs must be less for them to maintain the same or higher profits - which is to say that if they had these lower costs, they could maintain the same fees, deliver the superior and cheaper service, and see a huge boost to revenue. The fact that they're not doing this on their own suggests that the pricing you've mentioned doesn't reflect the situation at market but some interventionary distortion.
I think a case can be made that publicly funded improvement to infrastructure, insofar as it facilitates private-sector development and international competitiveness, is a good policy. But the fact of the matter is that short-term costs are a point against such a policy, and that benefits to the casual internet user, rather than business, are not really an important consideration. The NBN was killed by a Liberal Party that wanted to capitalise on opposition to short-term costs by large swathes of the public who weren't going to benefit significantly, as individuals, from improved service. In other words, the market wasn't (and presumably still isn't) ready for it.

Abbott's problem is that he had basically no pre-election ideas that were good. The main reason to vote for him was his promise that government would be stable and have no surprises.
One of his first acts was to reintroduce knighthoods. This was completely random and surprised people, especially as it was considered unnecessary.
Since then he has not delivered stability.
He has probably broken just as many promises as any other Australian leader, but due to his pre-election actions it seems much worse.

Well I'd appreciate opinions from Japanese people, but of course if any non-Japanese person has experienced these customs that could also be interesting insight.
I actually can't find the blog post anymore I read initially about them, but now I read these, too:
http://wkdfestivalsaijiki.blogspot.de/2007/02/first-third-of-year-joogen.html And also there's something in this Wikipedia article about etiquette in japan:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etiquette_in_Japan#Gifts_and_gift-giving As for my opinion, without ever participating in this custom, I don't think I can really say anything definite about it. In Germany we also of course give our teachers (for example music teachers or private tutors, normally not regular school teachers) some small gifts to thank them for their efforts (even though we're already paying them or the organization they belong to), but it's usually something comparably small, maybe a bottle of wine etc.
But it seems like the gifts normally exchanged for お中元 and especially お歳暮 are a bit more expensive (like \3000 or more). If you send gifts that expensive to multiple people, and then the whole thing two times per year, it seems to me like something I wouldn't like to do. Also in December I usually have even less money than normal because I buy christmas gifts and stuff. So for example I'd like to know how many people participate in this, do you have to do it, do people think lowly of you if you wouldn't do it, and what is your personal stance on the topic?

Yes, we have strange, odd custom, don't we?
Many people, especially in their 20s would agree with you.
Yet it's the custom already established in Japanese society, so we cannot totally ignore it either.
I think fewer people participate in the custom these days due to the bad economy, also our government increased sales tax from 5% to 8% in April, which made it harder for people to spend money.
>how many people participate in thisI cannot tell you how many, I searched on the internet, trying to find out if there's any official studies on this but there was none.

Well, I don't perceive it as strange or odd, many cultures have gifting traditions. For example for christmas and for birthdays we buy quite expensive gifts for people we're related or close to, and even for people that we aren't so close to we buy slightly cheaper gifts. That's why in December I spend much money just on gifts. And if a good friend has birthday I have to think of a creative, personal gift to express that I care about them.
Well, I could do without christmas gifts to be honest, as I don't particularly like christmas as an event. Officially I'm roman-catholic, but I don't really care about religion and thus I also don't really care about christian traditions. (Though I don't have a problem with people that value them highly. As long as people don't bother me or others through their actions they can be as religious as they want.)
The tax you were speaking about is 消費税? I recently learned different words for taxes and customs (and I don't mean 習慣 but 関税, I only just noticed it's the same word in English. Haha, my first language isn't English, so..) In Germany I think it's 19% tax, so I think I'd be happy about 8%.
In Germany there is a city called Dusseldorf (デュッセルドルフ), were many Japanese people live. Because I used to live there for a long time, I made a girlfriend who is a ハーフ (Japanese and German). But, we aren't together anymore and I moved away to study. I now live in アーヘン, and there are very few Japanese people living here. Sigh.. But I met a lady at my university, her name is 佐藤 I think, and she told me about, err, 25才の日本人の男の留学生 and he is searching for タンデムパートナー. So yeah, I should probably ask her about him, they're the only two Japanese I know about in アーヘン.

>>940 Thanks for the TV guide, I'll use that to find something I like. I can read/listen fairly well, so that's no problem.
Also about marijuana, it's not that I consume it regularly. I just think there's no reason to ban it, as it's less addicting and less dangerous than nicotin or alcohol, which are both allowed in our society. I frankly just don't see the point in banning it, especially when countries like Netherlands allow consume since many years and it isn't a problem for anyone. But, personally I don't think I'd use it often, even if it would be allowed. My only weak point is beer. I like beer way too much to the point where I drink a bottle every evening. But beer is very accepted in society, so no one is blaming me for that. How are drugs perceived in Japanese society? I heard laws are very strict against illegal drugs, but alcohol and cigarettes are very popular. Is it normal to try hard drugs at some point in your life? (For example when I was a teen ager we tried many different things, nothing really dangerous like heroin, but different herbs/salvia/mushrooms etc. but that was only to have fun once and try things out, today I would not do this again). Also do some kind of drugs play a part in tradition? For example wine is a central part in christian culture, and I think some kind of mushrooms are important for shamanic rituals in Africa or South America etc.–is there something similar in Japanese culture?

I saw people here are wondering if there's a limit of posts(text and image) per thread, so I sent an email to Hotwheels san regarding the topic. Here's the reply from him. ”There is no limit. However, threads expire. The bump limit is 250 posts. After 250 posts, a thread can no longer be bumped anymore. If a thread is stickied, however, it can get an infinite number of replies. This is quite annoying however, because big threads are slow to load in one’s browser. So, I recommend creating new threads after 250 posts. Thanks for using 8chan!”

Apparently the short story was controversial, caused a big argument between those who wanted to protect freedom of speech and those who claimed it was an insult to the Emperor and the imperial family. It went so far, a 17yrs old right-wing boy killed the publisher's housemaid, stabbed the publisher's wife. The auther dissapeared after the incident, because he felt responsible for the tragedy. The novel has not been published for a long time, but you can read it now(e.g. Amazon kindle)

>>960 Yes, thanks for contacting Hotwheels. Interesting to read his response.
>>963 Hm, I thought as much, but it's interesting how different it is compared to here. While we also have laws against recreational drug use (except of course alcohol and tobacco/nicotine) you are not regarded as an addict or a criminal by other people if you just try it once (of course always depends on the drug itself).
If you look at this chart (or the table below):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Development_of_a_rational_scale_to_assess_the_harm_of_drugs_of_potential_misuse_%28physical_harm_and_dependence,_NA_free_means%29.svg?uselang=ja You can see how addicting a certain drug is and how much it can physically harm you. Most people try some of the yellow or orange-colored substances at some point during their life, and don't have any problems with it. Not saying I condone or despise this.
>When we have event of cereblation, we drink sake, but sake is not drug.Sake is an alcoholic beverage, alcohol (well, ethanol in this case) is a drug. However it is of course completely legal to consume in almost any country. It does next to no harm if you don't consume too much of it.
My personal stance on the topic is that legislation makers should base laws more on scientific facts, and less on social norms.

敬語 a term of respect for the person or thing referred to. There are 3 kinds of 敬語(to be specific, there are 5 kinds) 尊敬語 honorific expression(words) by usuing words which mean directly admire(honor) someone, you can show your respect for him/her 謙譲語 modest expression(words) by usuing humble expression(putting yourself in lower position than someone), you can show your respect for him/her 丁寧語 polite expression(words) put ~です ~ます at the end of the sentence add 「お」「ご」 酒→お酒 家族→ご家族 see(見る) 尊敬語 ご覧になる 謙譲語 拝見する 丁寧語 見ます read(読む) 尊敬語 お読みになる 謙譲語 拝読する 丁寧語 読みます say(言う) 尊敬語 おっしゃる 謙譲語 申し上げる 丁寧語 言います(申します) Have you (ever) seen Tokyo Monogatari? 拝見する(kenjyougo)=見る させていただく(kenjyougo) おります(おりません)(kenjyougo) He used 3 kenjougo in one sentence, which is excessive usage of kenjyougo. Yeah, Hotwheels san seems to like the word "however" a lot. He was quite nice though, I received the reply within 20min. after I sent him the email.
It didn't surprise me to hear you occasionaly try recreational drug, as I spent a few years overseas and people told me teenagers' use of drugs and stuff.
>My personal stance on the topic is that legislation makers should base laws more on scientific facts, and less on social normsYes, I agree. The problem is though, what motivates politicians? Money, I think.
In Japan people under 20 are prohibited to drink or smoke by law. As you can see, almost every convenience store has the touch panel. Those who want to buy alcohol or cigarette have to touch the panel to admit that they're over 20.
You said you can read/write fairly well.
I've posted
>>983 &
>>998 regarding to Keigo.
I used to have textbooks of how to teach Japanese language to foreiners, as I used to teach(only a part time) I looked for the textbooks, but couldn't find any. I must have thrown them away when I moved out.
Without the textbooks it was not easy how to explain about keigo, especially I didn't want to give them wrong information.
It is hardly enough info, but I put some efforts and time in there, although nobody seem to care.
If that helps you in any way, I'd be very happy, as those would be one of my last postings.
Take care of yourself, ok?

>As you can see, almost every convenience store has the touch panel.Interesting, never heard of that panel before. They just ask for your ID here and you show the clerk, but of course being 18 years old is enough for anything you want to buy (and if you only want beer/wine etc. 16 years is enough). So even though I'm only 20 years old myself, they never really ask me, I guess I look old enough.

While I personally didn't learn anything new, I'm sure there are some people here who can make good use of these. I hope you're not gone forever, but yeah, take care and I wish you the best.
>>976 Here is another explanation for some 敬語. It only covers basics and won't teach you everything there is to know about it (partly because it is a really big topic with much to learn), but I think if you understand everything on that page you won't be confused by polite or humble sentences anymore.
