They say that the best way to become fluent in a language is to surround yourself with it. Given that I cannot go to Japan, is there a good way to recreate that environment, even if it's just inside of my home? I know that you can watch JP TV on your computer, and that newspapers are available in Japanese online. Are there any other good ideas for how to dive into the language without traveling?

That s going to be your biggest enemy. Hell Japanese are forced to take English Classes and are constantly exposed to roman alphabet and I've seen English in plenty of media. They can understand and claim to be an absolute beginner up to the point where it rustles me. IMO immersion will really only help your listening. Try hellotalk if you have an iOS/Android. Your best bet is a partner that will work with you.

I'm going to be looking for streaming sites or services for TV to start with, and from there I dunno. Considering newsprint and magazines, but do they have subscriptions to Japanese magazines that you can get shipped to the US? The PC is only one element, I'd like to get it on multiple fronts, printed word, TV, radio, etc.

There's Niconico, 2ch, millions of Japanese YouTube videos, and of course, anime and manga. If you sperg out and spend all of your time surrounding yourself with this stuff (while also using SRS flashcards to retain information) it's probably faster and more effective than any other method short of actually going to Japan.

Also, I forgot to mention video games, VNs, novels, etc.

In short, Japan is a huge exporter of entertainment. Use it to your advantage.

Are there any Visual Novels with furigana?
It would really help a lot. Since I only know about 400 kanji.

Can someone recommend me some good VN's?
I personally don't like sad storys where betrayal other hate comes up, but anything than that is fine. (also no homo stories^^)
