Alright, So I've been Japanese studying for about a year. Great progress, never enough. Always want more but I'm busy with work and schooling and I have shit for assistance outside of the glorious internet.

I've been focusing on grammar and vocabulary. I'm at about 600 words matured and 600 learned in a couple months and I'm consistent. I've been avoiding kanji for these reasons.

-I'm interested in speaking and understanding more than reading and writing
-I'm barely immersed in Japanese period, let alone the kanji
-No where to use it and much easier to forget since I'm an auditory learner
-It's not completely needed unless I'm in Japan or want to read books

Should I really try to invest in Kanji at all? I planned to regardless if I was at some level of fluency and not at an intermediate level. I mean shit, if I DID go to Japan I could just say "呼んでください” and that’s that.

Should I Start early and take it slow? Or in my situation there really isn’t that compelling of a need right now?

If you're really interested and serious (as it seems). You should begin with them asap, because you will need to know 2000 kanji and it's better to start as soonest.
It will be a great help once you're in Japan. Just learn a few each week. Try reading or writing sentences with these new kanji then, as practise makes you fluent in reading them.
Also check ANKI, it's a learning program, you can learn sentences, vocabulary and kanji easy with it.

Keep up the good work Anon! Motivation is the key to be successful. If you're always on the move, you might check the Android App: "Obenkyo", it will help you learn vocabulary, kanji and grammer. I think it is the best japanese learning app, as it makes you also fluent in reading and lets you correct sentences to get the grammer in mind.

Kanji are so essential to Japanese writing system that you can't avoid to memorise them when you try to learn how to write/read that.
even we Japanese got forced to take some kanji quizzes every week and it was a pain.

I mostly intend to speak and understand mostly

So What does 'understanding' Japanese that you are saying indicate? if you want for deep understanding, I think it would be necessary for you to learn writing and reading.

for sure, it's not that you must be needed to learn Kanji providing that you have been focusing on speaking and listening only.
but still I think kanji would help you understand Japanese deeply in my view and I recommend you to memorise kanji.
However you are supposed to decide whether you give it a try or not by yourself after all though. I hope that anything goes well with you learning it!

I'll take it slow. Makes it easier for me and I kind of enjoy it. Though handwriting is shit.

So they're basically meaning exclusive with no word attach to it?
