I made this thread on /b/ and /jp/, but they didn't seem interested.

I've been wondering this for a long time: how does 2chan compare to the English-language chans?

Aside from the occasional image and talk about how 4chan was a 2chan clone, I've heard very little.

Please keep in mind that it's possible that I can't explain what you want, properly because I'm not a 2chan user.

first and foremost, 2chan, also known as futaba channel(often just called futaba), is an imageboard site for Japanese so that people with foreign IPs can't post anything on 2chan though, but can read threads.
2chan in itself is quite closed unlike fellow imageboard sites in English.

Next up, 2chan was originally founded as a refuge for 2ch users in around 2001 when 2ch.net fell into crisis of closing.
but then, 2chan turned into the site with unique Internet culture by degrees.
some foreigners, who are devoted to and interested in Japanese culture, especially anime, manga, video-games and so forth, were influenced by 2chan.

that's why they founded a large number of sites similar to 2chan such as 4chan and krautchan to name just a few,
they often brought tons of meme and images to 4chan from there.

that's all I know about 2chan.

For more detailed information, I recommend that you should refer to the Wikipedia page on 2chan or visit http://www.2chan.net/ directly.
