So, I want to go to Japan at some point, but I'm afraid of being stared down. I've read a lot online about foreigners being stared at, looked weirdly at, etc.. Is it really that excessive? I heard it's not as bad in Tokyo, but I want to visit some smaller cities as well. I don't like people staring at me though. Anyone got any experience with this? Did you get used to it?

 No.1898

I went to Takayama back in january and I didn't get stared by anyone, or at least I didn't notice it. As long as you don't walk with a shirt with something like バカ外人だ! or 超ホモです。 written on it and don't go full weeaboo you'll probably be okay.

I'm dressed like a normal person lol. Weird how everybody says you'll get stared down but turns out that's not the case then? I'm short, brown hair, so in that sense I don't stand out much except my not-so-asian face.

They were probably fat nerds, and/or paranoid SJWs.

I'm tall, light-haired, and have a red beard. Been to plenty of places smaller than Takayama and never once been gawked at.

If you go to a place where foreigns aren't common, yes, you will probably be stared at.

Just tell yourself it's because you're so damn pretty, OP.

What does "literally" mean?

 No.1978

>>1971
literally
ˈlɪt(ə)rəli

adverb
adverb: literally
in a literal manner or sense; exactly.
"the driver took it literally when asked to go straight over the roundabout"
synonyms: verbatim, word for word, line for line, letter for letter, to the letter; More
antonyms: loosely, imprecisely, metaphorically

informal
used for emphasis while not being literally true.
"I have received literally thousands of letters"

Or in other words, exactly as it's written.
Often people don't REALLY mean it when they use the word, it is just used for effect.

You'll have no worries. FYI even in small cities there are native English speakers(e.g. Americans, British) working as ALT.
Japanese in general tend to be kind to white foreiners, whereas they tend to look down other East Asians, like Koreans, Chinese(not wealthy ones of course), Filipinos etc. which is stupid I think, but it's just the way they are.
If you are black you'll probably get stared at(not so much in Tokyo) as there aren't many black people in Japan.

A little bit late but here's some of my input anyways.

I lived in Japan for 6 months and either I'm dense or it really wasn't that big of an issue.
I was living in a small city in Kanagawa, so the only other gaijin I encountered were those enrolled in the same courses as me. People are aware that you're there, but the Japanese are very polite and won't stare unless you're doing something unusual.
One thing I did notice while traveling in gaijin groups though was that if we were talking, generally other people on the train were more talkative with each other and the opposite was also true. There were a couple times when we were quiet/on our cells and noisier groups quieted down (as if to save themselves the embarrassment when even the gaijin are being quiet)

The most noticeable stares you will get will be from children. I had children staring at me ALL the time, which I thought was cute and it was probably partially my fault for holding eye contact with them.

If you don't see anyone else doing it, it's probably best not to do it yourself. Don't do anything obnoxious and you'll be perfectly fine.

I think the weirdest thing that happened to me and my friends when we visited japan this summer were the people eager to take pictures with us.

We went to tokyo tower and I guess they were kids on a field trip or something like that and they wanted to take a picture with us. I am to this day still confused by this.

But I did not notice much staring.
