I don't play video games any longer so I'm not sure as to recent trend and mainstream in Japan, but I've heard kind of mobile games seems to tend to be popular among a wide range of ages because those games are easy to play anywhere only with smartphone.
Still, browser games also seem to be prevalent among young people (especially otakus) like KanColle/艦これ (short for KANtai COLLEction/艦隊これくしょん).
