You've probably already watched Chihayafuru but if you haven't I would strongly recommend it to you. It is a bit slow so be patient with it.

Chihayafuru is an amazing anime, I highly recommend it. You'll find out more about the competitive manner of playing karuta from watching it than about how it is played casually. Great story, wonderful characters. Made me quite interested in the game too.
