So I just finished Steel Ball Run. It was okay overall but it's easily my least favorite chapter. There's just so many things that were wrong with it.

A lot, and I mean A LOT of squandered character potential. Poccolocco was a big offender in this case. The whole first part of the race focuses on him and how he develops his stand, then he does almost nothing for the entirety of the story. But the absolute worst case overall was with Sandman. The story even fucking starts by introducing his character and then shows him kicking ass in the race, then has him in the background for most of the other parts up until he's revealed to be a bad guy and is promptly killed off. What the fuck man I was really invested in his character.
I wanted to see Valentine obtain the completed corpse and then achieve a third and final form like what happened with Pucci, so that Johnny would have actually had to get creative with INFINITE NAIL WORKS in order to beat him. No dice. Is it just me, or have villain defeats for this series been getting progressively worse? Kars' defeat was fucking magnificent. Dio's defeat was good. Kira's defeat was meh. Diavolo's defeat was bad. Pucci's defeat was just fucking shit. I guess the best I can say about Valentine's demise is that it wasn't as bad as Pucci's.
The whole Jesus thing is taken for granted and not really explained aside from "Jesus came to Murrika, now his corpse is here and it has INCREDIBLE POWER!" Overall it really seemed like a plot device. I did like Valentine's motive for wanting it, though. The end goal of "Rebuild Jesus so I can use his power to make America the GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH at the direct expense of those fucking ruskies and orients" was a lot better than Pucci's "Follow these instructions to obtain the ultimate stand that will destroy the universe and recreate it into one where everyone knows exactly what's going to happen to them, thus creating a perfect existence in which everything is really, really, REALLY fucking boring."
With the exceptions of Dirty Deeds, Scary Monsters and In A Silent Way, the stands in this chapter were crap. I'm guessing because nobody in this chapter got their powers from the arrows is why so few of them had full-fledged humanoid stands, but having so few humanoid stands in this story after having almost exclusively humanoid stands in the previous ones really made things feel like they were watered down. Also, Tusk was exceptionally lame. Acts 3 and 4 had pretty cool powers, but they were seldom used and instead most of the story is just Acts 1 and 2.
The epilogue mentions the dumb kid Gyro was trying to save getting pardoned, then mentions him dying anyway. Why? Why the fuck would you put that in, Araki? What was the point?
Gyro was the main character. Fuck Johnny.

I agree with all of these things
The pacing was kinda weird, the characters weren't really focused on much, and Gyro is entire the main character while Johnny is our growth character rather than it being Johnny is trying to win while Gyro looks for the corpse and teaches Johnny.
Just to vent about villain deaths
>Dio Brando gets fucked up in a manly death fight at close range and happens in two seconds nearly
>Kars gets fucked up, powers up, fucks up shit, then gets asspulled into space.
>DIO Gets super punched to death which was fucking cool to watch
>Kira dies because jotaro is OP as shit and not at all because of josuke's asspulls
>Like, if jotaro died earlier to kira like he should have, kira would have beaten josuke and Okuyasu at the final part.
>Kira should have killed josuke when he pulled himself back with the rubble, because the rubble was small as shit and should have left through the hole it entered on josuke's back
>He also should have noticed the fucking different voice on his phone
>Pucci dies because he didn't continue going forward
>Also because white snake was still active somehow
>and stand disks don't really make sense because jolyne or someone pulled one out of someone randomly once
haven't gotten to the end yet, but I was really shocked that I got half way through and Johnny hadn't gotten act 2 yet. Also soundman being made into a villain randomly was kinda weird, and I was expecting it to be norisuke who had a silent way. I don't really understand why we keep cutting back to Gyro's past and then he ties it to a mistake he is also making in the present, since if he made the mistake and should have grown from it he shouldn't have to grow from it twice over.
On the subject of the kid dying, didn't Araki have a problem with horror movies doing a thing where they zoom in on a character's back and then make it not anything? While I like that because it builds tension, him going right back on what he said and doing the same is kinda weird.
ALSO FUCK HIS ART NOW

>NOT TWIGGY TWATS WITH NO MANLY TO THEM
I hate seeing Araki draw characters from the older parts. They need medical attention.

>soundman being made into a villain randomly was kinda weird

I don't particularly mind that he joined Valentine, it made sense, but I do dislike that he was killed off that early. It would have been nice if he was around longer.

>araki redrew the pillarmen
>they look like the jojo and friends dressing up as them in mockery or whatever
>I find out that it is actually the pillarmen at their new girth
Unacceptable

I feel bad for derailing the thread; I made a separate thread so this can go back to talking about SBR.

I figured the stands Were the remixed Stands of past parts, because of the universe reset, like In a silent way being new verse ECHOES, the Iron one, Mountain Tim's being like Joylne, etc but that's just my opinion

 No.363

I really liked part VII, just finished reading and yeah, what up wit the dumb kid? That was shitty, honestly.

I liked the stands as they were, I thought it was kinda refreshing that not all of them were humanoid. Johnny's stand was kinda gross honestly, tho. I had to… get used to it. Reminded me of that time I had a nail removed because of an accident and had to wait for it to regrow (it took it a month or so). The skin below was exposed and I was grossed out at first but then I touched it and it was so soft and smooth and felt so good I missed touching it when my nail finally re-grew. But I digress.

I agree about the character potential. Sandman was a disappointment although it kinda made sense when explained in the manga.

I would've wanted Gyro to win tho. I can never enjoy any Zeppeli character in JOJO, dammit Araki.

 No.381

I read SBR knowing that Araki was going through a mid-life crisis writing it.

I feel it focused more on the relationship between Gyro and Johnny and the journey they take together, rather than the fights and conclusion.

The only time I've ever cried from a characters death was when Gyro died

 No.385

I enjoyed it feeling like a real adventure, though. I agreed on a lot of the flaws you all had, but just it taking place all across the country, loads of different encounters, I felt that had been something I missed.

And Ringo Roadagain's fight is probably one of my favorite in the entire series. Amazing art, great design, great dialogue, and great combat.
