Learning grammar is the quickest way to boost confidence and motivation in learning Japanese.
Also, you know you can just go straight to reading. You don't have to do things like anki.
People who say you can't do it by just reading probably used a text hooker (like rikaichan) to spoon feed them everything and then wondered why they weren't learning.
Basically doing anki forces you to more or less pay attention to what you need to be paying attention to and so it's successful for a lot more people.
With reading there is nothing forcing you to re-focus on words once you've found their definition and that's where people end up failing because when you think about it, they are never really making the connection between the japanese word and the definitions.
But if you can do it right, then by all means, use reading as your primary method of studying vocab.
