Currently, I post 80-90% of the content, and I feel like I'm hardly even scratching the surface of what's out there, waiting to be discovered. One person can only do so much.
Of course, it's not all that bad, since having the board motivates me to put in the work to find a lot of the material, but I'd still like to have some people helping me.
No.13567
Oh, and I forgot to mention it, but I recently changed the board rules to give people the freedom to post whatever they want (except for screamers and content violating global rules). I'm not trying to make it a single-subject board, but that might be the way it'll end up.

Jim refers to Jim Watkins, the owner of 2ch, and technically 8ch. He pays the hosting costs for both sites out of his own pocket. Well, if you want to get technical, he owns the hosting company both sites use. So basically he just doesn't bill either site, though he still has to pay for the bandwidth he is leasing out.
He's a retired US army general who clearly saved up his money. He regularly goes on lavish trips around the globe. If he was in this for profit, he would have axed 2ch years ago.
Since you'll probably ask
>Wait, an American owns 2ch?
Yes it's true. He seized it from the former owner because he had outstanding debts. Now that sounds evil, but nearly everyone welcomed the change. The previous owned turned out to be doing some incredibly shady things such as selling off user information and taking bribes to control conversations on the site. The second one was huge, as one of the groups he took bribes from was a Japanese political party. As you might guess, they paid to delete threads that were negative to their party and those favorable to their opponents. 2ch is Japan's biggest message board, so you can see why this was a massive scandal. When Jim heard this, he immediately stepped in and seized the servers and domain.

I am actually truing to start this thing myself, video editing and fancy artifacts seem easy enough for me but this pitch thing is getting on my nerves, my tone is nice but sometimes I can't stretch my sample enough and I get half a note.
It must be the samples I am using, "fuck you" has a nice long vocal, I'll try with the more established samples for now, but maybe I'll get to the same wall as you.
Maybe they use some other piece of software for the audio, mowtendoo or whatever seems to.
The strange thing is that some of my favorite mads don't have that much pitch editing they sometimes trow a sentence and it just fits.
No.20932
mowtendoo here. if you seriously want to make high quality/original otomads, then youre going to want reaper and after effects or similar. vegas is good entry-level software but has a lower ceiling in terms of skill and creative potential. not to say you cant make a good video with vegas if you work hard at it, but that effort would be better allocated to some superior software. i like to use vegas for quick filler videos just because its more familiar. theres something addictive about pitch shifting in vegas.
a little trick i use to help pitch shift is stretch the source music out so i can get the pitch and timing more accurately, then group it all and shrink back to original timing.

I'm not following you here. wouldn't slowing the playback speed have the same effect?
I'm also confused on what pitch constitutes. If pitch determines the note, and pitch is also determined by the frequency, then stretching the duration of the sound would affect the pitch, correct? What I'm not understanding is how the program is able to change the pitch without altering the length.

ok you got me. i wouldnt be surprised if he was around here though considering he uses 4jp. i'm sure he'd actually be happy to give you some tips if you message him.
i see where you're coming from but the pitch/note doesn't necessarily correspond with the speed/length of a sound. i don't know how else to put it. in vegas for example you can time stretch sources (ctrl+drag edge) so that they are slowed down or sped up but don't change pitch (like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxy1d0g2GcQ) and then choose to have the pitch change according to speed by ticking "Lock to stretch" in properties. you can also use the +/- keys to manually change the pitch by one note regardless of speed but you can't pitch manually if you lock to stretch. stretch your sample to fit the length of the music (original speed is cool too) and then pitch up and down until you hit the note.

No.21141
>>21139
keep in mind that some songs and samples just dont go together or arent fit for use in otomad at all. pure piano pieces are especially tough because each note is hard to isolate from the other. you generally want a song where the bass and melody are well-defined and distinct from eachother ie not using the same instrument. its not impossible but it is hard and the result is usually sub par. i'll see if i can work something out with van's fuck.
No.21142

really rough job here but the melody at least seems doable. would still advise against using this song.
No.21143

that's not bad. did you stretch the duration on any of those samples, or is that exclusively pitch shifting?
I'm not really sure how to differentiate between melody and bass.
On >>21111 would the melody be the chain of "WHOO"'s and the bass be the ass percussion?
No.21144

stretched it all out so i could get the timing more accurately and then pitch shifted after shrinking back. stretching stuff can put weird limits on the amount of pitch shifting allowed so you want to keep your samples closer to original speed when trying to get a lot of notes out or its a pain stretching them back all the time.
im not really familiar with real music terminology myself but i guess i mean melody as in "foreground" notes and bass as in "background" notes. there isnt really bass in that video, just melody and percussion.

when people say that they do their audio in reaper, what do they really mean? are they doing the entire audio track in reaper, pasting it into vegas/after effects, and then somehow trying to synch the visual components of the samples to the audio?

Were you trying with wine? I just read that apparently there is an experimental linux version: http://www.landoleet.org/dev/
It seems to work for me, it was really easy too. I just got the "developer", unpacked it and then also downloaded the libSwell-gtk3 library and put it inside the same directory as the reaper5 executable and then ran it.
I've never used this before so I don't know if it's really working right or not though. I get no sound, but the readme file said they only support alsa right now. But I'm sure there are ways of getting it working, the simplest would probably just be to uninstall pulseaudio

>>22862
I don't think it's any single thing. It's almost as if the problems are so pervasive that I can't really put my finger on what they are, but maybe that's just a poor excuse to avoid real analysis.
In the beginning, the atmosphere here felt very optimistic, and I felt like that was very conducive to the creation of quality content and discussion (and indeed, the quality of discussion was much higher earlier on).
I can't speak for others, but in my case, I'm less optimistic about the future of this site than I was at the beginning for a number of reasons. First, there's much less interaction between the community and hotwheels, problems aren't really addressed. Many of the top boards (I know of at least /v/, /b/, /r9k/, /a/, /gamergatehq/ and /int/) are run by hotpockets. Most of these hotpockets are all part of freddit's IRC clique, and it's very unlikely they'll be removed. Hell, acidman, the owner of /gamergatehq/, was revealed to be keeping files on the posters of his board, and sharing at least some of this information with the FBI. Freddit intervenes, acidman says he dindu nothin, and Freddit says that's good enough for him. If keeping records of posting histories and sharing them with the FBI isn't enough to have you removed as a board owner, WHAT IS? As far as I'm aware, acidman isn't even a part of freddit's irc clique, so I'd imagine the likelihood of someone like mark from /v/ being removed is nothing short of impossible.
Of course, it wouldn't really be necessary for hotwheels to intervene if people were capable of voting with their feet, but either they don't care about the state of things, or they don't care enough to do anything about it. /am/, a free speech alternative to /a/, has less than 10% of the users of /a/, a board which bans people for using acronyms like "lol". In theory, if a board owner were to abuse their power, the users would hold them accountable and move to another board, but in practice I can only think of a few examples of alternative board becoming more popular than the board the users came from. I'm pretty sure the most popular gamergate board has changed around, I think I remember /gg/ and /gamergate/, but honestly I'm not so sure. Aside from that, there was /intl/, and it was spammed to death (most of the users are now on freech from what I can tell).

The thing with /am/ is that it shared the fate of most smaller pro-freedom altboards that didn't die completely; it essentially turned into a very small circle of posters with very specific memes and a lack of broader discussions. I posted there for a bit because I would really like to see an anime board free of ruleshittery succeed, but kind of lost motivation.
