Heck, I never even had that when I was working. As I am right now I have time to enjoy the things I enjoy and then work to improve myself by working out, reading, learning a new skill, whatever. When only a third of the day is allowed for free time you have to choose between continuing to improve yourself and going insane from the lack of recreation or continuing to have fun and going insane from lack of improvement.
Whenever I would try to read a book for a bit and then play some strategy games I would neither retain the information from the book nor get very far into a game before it was time to eat, shower, and sleep. I would milk every minute by getting 6 hours of sleep and getting to work at the last possible minute (or often 5 minutes after that) and I still felt chrono-claustrophobic.
Right now I've found a bit of a sweet spot being a part time student at the local community college; I get to have some sort of structure to my week while still having plenty of time. I'm just a little worried about what will happen when I run out of the money I saved up (which will probably happen in January,) since I don't think I have instincts as strong as yours.

Any time someone makes a post, the software has to rewrite the .html for the thread, the catalog, and all the board pages.

The reason an imageboard commonly has an arbitary 15 page limit is due to the time it takes to recache every page after a new thread is created. Some developers think they're clever by writing caches to the harddisk, but the bottleneck becomes the very expensive and hard limited disk I/O. With Infinity, posts never need to be deleted. Caching will work with existing technologies like Memcached.
This means the read/write function loads entire threads into its cache that is stored on the HD where your board is and then saves them again if there is an update to these threads. From the user's perspective, that leads to his post not getting displayed although it has been already written into the database which leads to threads freezing for no apparent reason, post being in limbo indefinitely or the entire website simply crashing. Changing the OS, the process manager or throwing resources at the problem are just band aid fixes. At the end of the day, vichan is just too shit to deal with so many users at once. In the long term, the software as it is right now is unsustainable.
The irony is, that this isn't Hotwheel's fault in particular except for the fact that he has chosen vichan, because it was the most modern IB software out there. He didn't have many to choose from anyway. 90 % of all other Image Boards are on the same software since 2007. This means they all run on either, Futaba+Futabilly and something else to replace Gazou BBS, Wakaba, Kusaba; that's it! The other 10% are powered with something selfmade that usually hasn't been upgraded since the Bush administration and isn't open for anyone. DerGeneral for example refused to give out Desuchan when other Eurofags asked him for it, because it was the most advanced software at the time. 4chan runs on a monstrosity called Yotsuba that becomes unusable if the Hotpocket crew fucks up the backend.
Try infinity next again, no matter how shit it looks* and you will see that your post is here at the same time you have pressed the reply button. Not only is it pretty snappy but it is in contrary to everything else that is available stable enough to handle about a million more or less regular users**. Please consider that 8chan may have become more popular since /pol/ and /n/ got more attention thanks to a video about mass immigration has become viral (2 million views).
