To be fair, you just need a good channel with decent folk. Problem is, linking channels often brings many of the worst types of users to the channels, such things can often ruin it for more legitimate users when they see some of the worse sides of irc. Of course nothing's worse than a rampant circlejerk, something that is easy for over or under moderated channels to become. There's a handful of active channels I partake in but nothing great enough to mention, not that I really would want to even then. The best thing you can really do is to have an online friend who already uses irc and can recommend some decent channels, because ones being linked or advertised here (or god forbid worse boards) will not be what you're looking for.
