I browsed 4 /jp/ back in 2012/2013.

Maybe things wouldnt have changed as much had /a/ and /v/ not ran in sometime after,

but things were rather different after a load of people killed themselves, regardless of immigration.

I can imagine alot of reasons /jp/sies would be depressed. Depression isnt usually being sad because theres some state of affairs or event that should logically make you sad.

Various reasons that could cause these things on their own, or in any combination with each other:

Loneliness

Mental illness(autism, natural predisposition to depression, etc)

Abuse by parents, either in the past or ongoing

Abuse by peers, either in the past or ongoing

Taking it too easy(ie, not using endless free time as NEET to do things that are actually engaging and enjoyable, or not using it for that enough)

Not eating enough

Excessive masturbation

Maintenance of a bitter and unfriendly attitude(may be selective about towards what sorta people its directed)

And probably more, plenty more

not so many killed themselves but moved elsewhere, personally i moved to irc

i do agree about the exponential increase of normies over time though. Many boards on 4chan lost that sense of self moderation from outsiders and normalfags alike. Tricks used got turned against them by mass shitposters who spammed them thinking they were welcome.
