The alimony of one man is a tragedy. The alimony of fifty thousand is a statistic.

Explanation? I just know it's a myspace thing

Before they were called memes, they were called "fads" on YTMND. Here's the entry for the Myspace suicide fad:

Jesus christ this is some REALLY oldfag shit. Were they really called fads? That word seems to bring back something within me foggily. These fads are like ancient egyptian myths.

The word "meme" wasn't even around (until Dawkins' 2006 reprint of The Selfish Gene refreshed the term in the cultural zeitgeist) at the time: https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=meme

YTMND still being around is a boon for internet archaeology so you can easily pick random fads from the wiki and search, e.g.: http://ytmnd.com/search?q=not+guaranteed

The thing to remember is that in the early-mid 2000s we had fast enough internet to enjoy pics, flash, and other multimedia, but there weren't yet compartmentalized meme-based niches like *chan boards or subreddits. SomethingAwful, before it spawned internet SJW culture (LF -> /r/shitredditsays -> various IRL cancer), before even 4chan was founded, hosted Photoshop Phridays where a relatively large fraction of internet talent intermingled fads with one another. Same with Fark, when that was a thing.

well if youre going to mention internet history you cant leave out encyclopedia dramatica.its quite fascinating to read a contemporary article from like 2007.

what is LF?

I just assumed everyone here knew about 4chan/ED/KnowYourMeme/Reddit. YTMND/SA/Fark were some of the precursor meme epicenters though.

Laissez's Faire was a Ron Paul containment subforum on the SA forums that eventually got taken over by Marxists. Not a problem, except SA was also host to an early strain of organized callouts/doxxing (the Helldump subforum). The insufferable communists then made determined takeovers of the levers of power, killed all fun, killed SA, and metastasized from there. Not sure if the SAclopedia's publicly accessible, but there are more details here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/dictionary.php?act=3&topicid=2072

 No.4682

I know I have the YTMND "official" soundtracks buried on a hard drive somewhere.

>>4665

nah, you gotta be a goon, and that nigga aint gettin my 10bux.

on a nother not since we have a legit goon in our presence, why do people refer to SAgoers as goons?

 No.4693

>>4663

I had to explain today to someone that there was a time before youtube and people had to find shit elsewhere. Oh, those pre-2005 years, what a glorious time.

Back when people used to call out freaks on the internet instead of "embracing their diversity", SA had a thing called "Awful Link of the Day". They'd rip on shitty Sonic fanpages or feeder forums or whatever random shit you could find. With that in mind, the SAclopedia entry for "Goon":

>Awful Link of the Day owner came over here back when registration was open to anybody and made a thread in GBS calling all of us goons for putting mean words in her guestbook.

>>4693

Iktf. The sites changed, of course, but zero load times, auto-playlists, endless scrolling pages, mobile devices all seem like one single, massive difference between then and now.

JUST FUCK MY ATTENTION SPAN UP
