What makes /justvideogames/ different from all those other boards?

/justvideogames/ is a video game discussion board. This board is a bit different from a place like /v/ in that it is not video games with a slice of /b/ justified under the pretense of “board culture”. The only board culture here has to do with video games! This board is different from /svidya/ (or at least how it used to be) because we won’t ever try to tell you whether your post is “high quality” enough to stay on the board. Every post does not need to be an essay. As long as you keep it about video games, go wild! It is not our call to decide whether an opinion on a game or video game topic is acceptable—we are only here to ensure the topic of discussion (that of video games) stays focused. And finally, this board is different from other alternatives like /vvv/ in that we do not believe in the concept of “zero moderation”. Without any moderation at all, every board no matter what the outlined goal of discussion is eventually turns into an anarchic free-for-all like /b/. Newcomers come in, see the random fun everyone is having either ironically or not, and slowly user replacement edges the topic away from its original intention. We won’t let that happen here. Rest assured: when you browse the catalog on /justvideogames/ looking for something about video games to discuss, you won’t have to wade through a bunch of off-topic stuff to get to it.

Here are the current rules we've devised after some deliberation. Keep in mind these rules are still a work in progress and these may end up changing a bit down the line.

THE RULES

1. If it’s video games, it stays! We won’t attempt to police your opinion on video games!

2. If it isn’t video games, well anon we have plenty of other boards on 8ch to facilitate your topic of discussion. And in the event that we don’t, you can always just make one of your own!

We do not believe in rules against “trolling” or “shitposting” because it is simply too difficult to consistently ascertain whether someone isPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

>how is it legal to sell something as a 3 terabyte hard drive, but only give 2.75 terabytes

It's a decimal/binary thing, drive manufacturers use factors of 10 (so kilo is 1000) to while computers count with factors of 2 (kilo is 1024) so it ends up being less.

How do you define "retro"? Pretend that halfchan's /vr/ never existed.

I personally hesitate to include anything made after the NES generation.

 No.675

Honestly, at this point, a retro game would be an early Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 game. Any game made between 2000 and 2004, Like Dark Cloud, Windwaker, etc. Personally I like to define retro by how much time has one by and the difference between generations. We're at a point where clearly the technology of the 6th gen is being way overpassed by our current state of technology, thus it is retro. To say a console like the SNES,etc. is the last retro console is just artificially defining the term.

It is my belief that every program should ask you where it wants to store its settings on installation (in documents and settings or in the main installation folder).

The Registry is fucking shit no matter how you spin it though.

 No.99[Reply]

What are some parts of video games that make you really question what the developers were thinking when they designed them?

Stage 3 of Image Fight has this ridiculous boss that fills the screen with lasers that turn 90 degrees seemingly at random. I have never managed to figure out a way to beat this boss in the intended manner as the lasers are just too difficult to predict.

Instead, there is an exploit where you can simply park your ship up above the boss as it's deploying its laser pods and then destroy it with little effort by damage from your ship exhaust or gun pods.

having health orbs be a rare drop in too human. like what the fuck. couple the guarantee of dying several times in the level, ( and thus getting to enjoy the 5+ second long death animation) with the tedious well "puzzles" that, while cool the first couple times you do it, becomes tedious the hundreth time,( and you WILL be playing every level at least a hundred times to max out or 100% the game), makes the already 30-45 minute long ( the ice forest is probably more like 2 hours before you account for dying) levels become 1 hour+ slogs of tedious misery.

i think it wouldnt have been as bad if they had kept the origional 4 player co-op instead of reducing it to two. at least me and a friend think it was originally going to be 4 player co-op, given the size of lobby screen and that there are exactly 4 classes, one of which is a medic and is completely useless in solo or 2 player co op, like its entirely a support role with very few combat skills. that combined with the frequency of death and the serious lack of health giving items. my best guess for its removal would be that halo 3 launched shortly before this, and 4 player co-op was a big selling point for it, and microsoft didnt want any competition for their golden cow.

There is this completely retarded final segment in another IREM game. At the very end of Ninja Spirit, just before the final boss, you have to navigate through this obscenely long maze of ninjas that kill you instantly if you touch them. It's a ridiculous task of rote memorization and really sours what is otherwise an excellent and fair game up until that point.

 No.474[Reply]

So I stumbled across this freeware shooter called MECHA Ritz recently and I'm pretty impressed with it. It's a bullet hell shooter with a snazzy Genesis/FM Towns-style chiptune soundtrack. It's pretty easy to simply clear despite the way it looks, but the idea with the game is to play for score and have it get harder on you as you play better.

The most striking thing to me about this particular doujin game is that it actually lets you map your own keyboard controls for once, instead of forcing ZXCV + Arrows faggotry on you.

You can download it here by clicking the big top link that says 「MECHA Ritz」 on it:

http://www.freem.ne.jp/dl/win/8513

Give it a try!

Does anon have any other underground freeware that people never seem to talk about?
