MILITARY THREAD

>Have you served your country? Which branch and for how long?

>Did you like it during your service? Do you regret it?

>Would you consider rejoining?

>Any memorable moments? Tell us a story.

________

Hey /k/. My dictatorial parents are forcing me to join the Navy. It's their final solution to ridding of me ever since I magically became an adult due to some arbitrary age.

I was already planning to join, but I had wanted to achieve peak performance in my body, learn a couple skills, and learn a couple languages before enlisting. Plus, I think I'm simply too fucking young and coddled to join right off the bat of turning 18.

Anyway, I've come here to ask what position I'll be in after I join. Will I be some expendable petty faggot who peels potatos and washes socks? I don't trust recruiters as I view them as salesmen. Goddamn, I'm pissed; I feel like joining the Marines and dying for Israel just out of spite for my parents.

Take it from somebody who knows first-hand; "supportive parents who listen to reason" are more often than not just too weak to stop you pissing your life away. Because when you're young they will only be supporting you in making poor decisions and listening to reason that isn't based on real experience.

You said you want to join the navy. Waiting could end up costing you that dream for any of a thousand reasons.

But at the end of the day it's not a matter of being given a choice. You're 18, you can do what you want as long as you can face the consequences. Good luck either way, /k/omrade.

I can't serve because I got heyfever and hypoglycemia. I never tried to enlist but I already know the answer anyway. Plus living in Europe = nofuns = no training so I am doomed living as an armchair general. And listening to my dad.

He was conscripted in the Dutch army in '82 and served until '99 (voluntarily ofcourse). He was in glorious Leopard 2. Often tells stories about deployment in Germany and training excercises against other countries.

>French drink and drive APCs

>Afro-American who's two meters tall and just barely fits in a M60A3

>Spanish who just stop exercising because lol siesta

>Britbong officer who shouted at my dad because he had his hands in his pockets, he thought he was a Britbong because of similair camo pattern but nope

>Germans who maintain their tank with a time schedule (30 min for replacing tracks ie)

But he almost never talks about his SFOR deployment in Bosnia. For a good reason I guess, I never push the subject and when we talked about it (four times or so) he changed subject quickly. By the looks of his face he doesn't want to remembered of it.

I want to join the military. I have ever since I was a little kid. By the fact that I am on /k/ you can tell that I am a bit of a military nerd. My infatuation with all things military is insane. I have studied everything from cadences to small unit tactics to brigade maneuvers to gear to MOS's, everything. I just can't decide which branch or MOS I want to join.

I am torn between the Marines or The Army and within those two branches I am even more torn.

In the Marines I am torn between either Infantry, LAV crewman or Rotary Wing repairer. I also can't decide whether I'd rather ideally serve on a MEU or get stationed in Japan. For the Army I am torn between 19D or UH-60 repairer or crew chief.

I've heard all the bullshit like "join the Navy or Chairforce or take something you can use outside of the military" but I have chosen these several positions and branches for a reason and now I am struggling to choose. Can anyone who has served in any of these positions in either of these branches please tell me there experiences so that i can choose.

BTW, I scored high enough on the Practice ASVAB that I am fairly confident that I will be able to choose just about anything I want.

Marine Corps. They are a smaller force have more pride in their work and better esprit de corps than regular army.

This is from my interaction with each branch….again, YMMV and just one dope's opinion.

Remember each branch selects people from the same pool of screwed up humanity and there will be a-holes and dirt bags in every population.

If you want to make a career out of the branch you choose then work at it and avoid the losers that will drag you down.

Never been in the military but wtf is up with weird ass dudes who pretend like they've been in the military? Is this just an American phenomenon or does it happen in other countries too? d9e53a No.325884

>does it happen in other countries too?

It used to happen here after the war and even after WW2. After WW2 there were a bunch of people who bullshitted their way into a military pension by lying about being communist fighters during the war. After 1995 a bunch of cunts wanted to do the same thing using the rather irregular nature of the early new Croatian Military to their advantage, some even pretended to be disabled veterans. The vast majority of those people were caught, but some received military pensions for a few years.

You don't get to choose your job in SF, you take tests. If you dont make it for demo medic etc you are a weapons sgt. Emphasis on SGT. Please don't get an 18x contract, they wont respect you. Just do your career till you make buck sgt then volunteer for it. That way you have experience and know how things work. Plus most SF are not green berets, only the guys on A-teams are.

And if you fail the selection you get whatever MOS they want to give you. You may think you will go be a specops badass, but you wash out and end up a sanitation expert.

YOU FORGOT TO CHECK MY SWEET TRIPS

How so? Is it due to having beliefs/hobbies/interests not shared my most around you, Parents never set up playdates, bullied? It does matter, as your recruiter, if he gives half a shit, will ask you these things to determine if you are worth his time and effort, as they tend to be rather picky at peacetime, BUT are willing to help you if you do your part. A good recruiter works on a "please tell, but If I cant tell, dont ask dont tell" basis.

If it makes you feel better, I had been accused of being assburger to this day by mom (disorganized, sometimes grumpy etc.) among other things, only to be discredited by actual psychiatrists, for having similar traits to herself. I can almost guarantee that none of you are going to make it on the pure base that nobody in this thread has even mentioned running or rucking like a madman but instead recommend learning two very difficult languages as a fucking enlisted(?).

If you're just enlisting in a normal MOS (as in, you don't get a shot at SF selection which you will probably fail because you've spent a grand total of two months in a uniform) all you really need to work on is your physical fitness. You don't need hand to hand or shooting skills, they're going to teach you that the way they want it.

If you're pegged out for selection you need to work massively on your land nav, ruck marches, running, swimming, heights, strength and overall soldiering abilities. Which is why it's a really bad idea to go in as a civvy off the street.

>Does anyone have any advice on running? I want to run 3km in 12min withouth being out of breath afterwards. I've heard that HITT works to make fast cardio gains?

I was around 2650m in 12 mins before I joined up just by running every weekday. Started out really slow and ended up with something like 4km a day in the end.

After 2 months in I was running 3km in 12 mins. Might have been the constant battle drill sprints, ruck marches and core exercises, but could also just be me being able to push myself harder.

Don't forget to do your strength exercises as well. I was a skeleton who could run forever but still lacked raw carrying power. Even a bodyweight routine of pullups, pushups, situps, squats and what have you would have improved my performance. A full gym routine would probably be ideal, although you might lose some gains because you won't have time to work out in the first few months.

During Patrol STX I got our whole section a pat on the back as well as a smoking for taking the OPFOR'S 249's and AN/PVS-14 during a recon while they were on a smoke break. SFC: "WHY DO YOU HAVE A SAW CADET, AND WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET NODS!?" "…Sergeant, I thought it was a good opportunity to get our AR's… AR's." "OH MY GOOD GOD DAMN PUT THAT BACK CRAZY." "Yes Sergeant, right away Sergeant."

He couldn't grade the rest of the land because he went back to his truck in a fit of laughter.

>I don't trust recruiters as I view them as salesmen.

this so much they have quotas for certain jobs to fill.

My experience is from the marine corps if you join

1.) do 2 years so it will be over quick and your body isnt in shit condition when you leave.

2.) research all possible MOS's and find one you like and pic that.

because your job and your unit determine how shitty your life will be in the military. you get to pick your job not you unit.

basically dont pick infantry IT FUCKING BLOWS

pick an MOS that will give you the training and skills to get a good civilian job

>more pride

They are so brain washed they will deny reality. sorry but the majority of marine that i have met have there head so far up their ass its unbelievable.

>Waiting could end up costing you that dream for any of a thousand reasons.

What you mean, anon? He can enlist until he's 35. It could be extremely helpful for him to have a job for a bit, even 6mos, and learn more executive and social skills in a less cutthroat environment.

Kids who grow up in sheltered, meek lives are not prepared for the intense group pressures and group demands of fellow recruits/soldiers.

Army will get you more opportunities and you can move into higher end specialties. Marines is pretty much dead end, single track occupation; their funding is quite limited. Little wiggle room.

I do respect them, but their propaganda of pride, honour, and such seems to me overcompensation and gloss. Marines have the lowest education levels, highest crime rate, and generally worse stats on all measures. Their CAX is well-integrated, but for personal advancement you're much better off with Army.

>implying i'd give up the first time I will most likely fail due to medical reasons. Shit happens

No, its about sending a fucking message. im tired of both /k/ being represented by affluent autistic furfags as well as the overall EuroPOG superiority complex that Ive seen to held towards those who cannot serve for whatever reason. Also for overall self improvement We need some fresh, non-4chan related OC anyhow.

I will end my career with either a Tan or Green beret on my damn forehead, even If I have to die trying.

tl;dr consider me /k/'s equivalent of /co/'s painanon.

Just fuck my shit up, Drill Sergeant Sempai

You both are absolutely right, I turned down what would have been a relatively comfy 25F for this, which would be full retard if it weren't for the fact that I intend on making this a career and the particular civilian careers that interest me value the skills I will learn in the near future.

>>330624

You're right as well, though I do have to admit that the the 'Corps have the best dress uniforms.

I used to want to join my military, but then I actually worked with someone from are army working in a hardware store. He was a complete manlet, the fucking native guy who works the back intimidated him into submission.

The myriad of other problems that have been coming up now is only compounding my decision to stay out.

Fine fine, best current American dress uniform

The one advantage it has imho over the Hugo Boss shit is its overall timelessness, Looked good 50 years ago, looks good now, will look good 50 years in the future though it could use a more angular wrist cuff design as an update Navy vastly improved their now-sexualized one, Airforce one is decent, if unremarkable.

Pic related. Shit's not fair

Government goon thread!

Share your stories of why you chose to serve your overlords like the lapdog you are! Personally I just couldn't stand not sucking the dick of the Us Gov and being rewarded with welfare upon welfare. Just abandon all your morals like I did and go to school for free haha fucking tax payers are idiots!

"Figuring things out for yourself is the only freedom anyone really has. Use that freedom. Make up your own mind"

Given the choice, Id rather suck the dick that would allow me to potentially remove kebab than the one that tells me to apologize to them for me not letting them rape my family sooner.

Do you get it now?

>implying i'd give up

Have you ever actually rucked until it stopped being fun? Without food? Limited water? In the rain? What's your training like right now?

You can read everything you want about being a soldier but until you actually try it, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about until you're actually there.

>No, its about sending a fucking message.

Nobody is going to care. /k/ isn't going to care. The people at SFAS aren't going to care. Your friends probably aren't going to care because they don't know what it's like.

>im tired of both /k/ being represented by affluent autistic furfags as well as the overall EuroPOG superiority complex that Ive seen to held towards those who cannot serve for whatever reason.

/k/ is shit. I don't know why I'm still here. The place is rampant with know it all civilians who think that because they own an AR they're basically hired by a PMC. You can't have even close to a good discussion because people are missing the most basic parts of soldiering and are adamant in their beliefs even though they've never done anything close to it.

>We need some fresh, non-4chan related OC anyhow.

And that's going to be what? You talking about how selection sucked? Nobody is going to get it because they've never been outside the city.

>I will end my career with either a Tan or Green beret on my damn forehead, even If I have to die trying.

A lot of bravado. Just remember that you're spending your time on an imageboard for autistic manchildren who think they know everything. You would literally prepare yourself better by getting rid of your computer and spending all your time working out.
