Got a sandwich with capocollo (something made from the neck of the pig) and a dried sausage.

Guys, how do you even survive without this?

Probably I will need lots of water, but I have a hydration pack

I didn't find a granola bar, but I will look for it tomorrow morning

It's called Bondiola here, it can be with more or less fat depending on the cut used (distance from the neck), but, in essence, it's pretty much the the same thing. I was just thinking that a soppressata might be better suited for a longer time period innawoods than regular salame.

Packing almonds and other nuts also helps, that shit is natural concentrated nutrients and it will last a while as long as it's well packed. Same with dehydrate fruits. Just grab a ziploc shove it with that and keep it in backpack pocket.

dry sausage is good. Canned fish is OK but then you gotta pack out the tin. Some almonds or walnuts are good too. If only a half day then you really don't need to worry about weight much. A regular sandwich will work though you'll want some snacks to keep your energy up

But I strongly suggest you acquiring the skill to hunt and process small game. Yes it is illegal in a lot of places if they catch you with meat on your car/pack or you leave the carcass out in the open. If is for you to eat and there is no waste, 99% of officers don't give a fuck.

The prohibition comes from some motherfucker hunting big game a lot. Like 5 deers in couple of weeks. Who the fuvks eat that much of meat in such a low time frame ? Things like that.

Few weeks ago I killed a wild boar here and the only thing the feds asked was go not waste and do a proper waste cleaning.

Depending on length of stay/need for leave-no-trace you can do various things.

If you are just out for a short time (1-3 days) you might just get some snacks as recommended and eat them. No heating required, but keep in mind to drink enough. Never eat without drinking, else you will dehydrate.

If you are out for longer (3-7+ days) you should think of packing some other stuff. You might mess your stomach up with extended consumption of snack bars (lel) and dried foods, also you will want to eat something warm probably.

Without a need to stay low key (stealth camping, summer season = forest fire, SHTFantasy) you can just make a nice camp fire and cook your stuff on there. Note, that you will start smelling like smoke, it's ridiculous how often people overlook that fact and act surprised.

If you gotta stay hidden or can't make an open fire (or don't want to), you can use a camping stove with any kind of material. Esbit, gas, alcohol, pick your poison. Very compact, not too much smell/smoke/flame and works fine. Gas in winter sucks, as you will need half a can to heat some medium sized pot, so stick to other fuel in winter.

Okay, so what to cook now? My receipt for long term food in the outdoors that is weight and cost efficient as well as doesn't mess up your stomach is a mix of dry rice and lentils packed in ziploc bags. It's a very efficient way to carry around foodstuffs (and other gear) that the UL fags first brought into practice. You can also take bannock and things like that to make bread or soup. Also bring tea, hot chocolate, soup powder and whatever else you might stir into a cup of hot water.

Basically for longer stays you want all the proteins, carbohydrates and fats you need, plus vitamins, minerals, etc. (that's macro- and micro-nutrients). Rice plus lentils gives you all essential amino acids and is very easy to cook, just throw it in your cup/pot with a 1:2 water ratio and let it cook with some stirring until the water is gone. Add some sauce/spices and you're set. Add some oil for fats and better flavor. That's the cheap way basically.

If you don't just hang around outside but actually do a lot of physical shit, use more fats and carbohydrates. I recommend dextrose sugar tabs, they don't hurt your teeth, go directly into the blood and really give you a nice supply of energy without that extreme energy curve other sugars do (super awake, then slacking off from low blood sugar). Also they're kinda cheap, you can buy that shit in bulk I think and just take a pouch full of them with you. Remember to drink when you eat them.

Same goes for salts, if you sweat a lot you need your electrolytes. Brawndo got electrolytes. It's what plants crave. No seriously, get some tasty cracker shit so you don't run low on salts when sweating a lot. Don't use these survival salt tablets unless you really dehydrated and almost starved and need to be rebuilt from the ground up, with tons of waters and a lot of salts.

Another nice thing, though heavier, is canned food. I prefer canned legumes from a company called Baktat I discovered some time ago. You basically got your proteins, fats, salts and some water in one 300-400g package, add some weight due to the tin can. It's about 600 kcal per serving. With some bread or grains you are golden. Plus they taste way better than "just" beans from the can and come in smaller servings, so I don't have to eat a 500g can of beans at once. They also sell hummus, which is a paste made of chickpeas and sesame, plus oil and garlic. With bread this is a very calorie dense meal that tastes superb cold.

Also take some candy. Chocolate, licorice, whatever you prefer. I can't stress the importance of a nice piece of chocolate when you are sitting in a windy rainstorm. It will boost your morale significantly. Plus it gives you sugar, which is a good energy boost when you are moving a lot. Also alcohol, if you are not addicted. A sip of whiskey in the same situation calms you down and warms you a bit. But don't overdo it, or you can freeze to death, also it takes a toll on your body and drains you of energy, so don't over drink. Just a sip now and then.

Depending on the season you can also eat what is outside. A lot of plants are edible and can be eaten raw or with little preparation. A 100% wild plant diet is a big change for your stomach though, so don't go out thinking you can just live off the land. Firenettles have vitamin C though, so if you don't have some multivitamin with you (which is a good idea for long term stays outdoors), you can eat those for that. Also young acorn leaves provide that. There's a fuckton of plants you can eat, but remember to never eat anything you are not 100% sure it's what you think it is. Some have poisonous lookalikes that can kill you or at least fuck up your stomach real good.

Last but not least, get into caching. If you are outside a lot and don't want to carry canned foods or stuff like that, create some spots where you stuff away foods. You can easily access them later on and can put waaay more shit in there than you could carry. That way you could easily stay outside for months. Check the SF manuals on that, they recommend cashing if it is possible (as it is for us in peace time).

What about jerky? It can be used too or it would be detrimental?

c16933 No.327277

>>327268

It should have some salts, but not too much. If I remember right, these kinds of meats do have a lot of salt in them. So you also need to drink a lot, just to make up for that. I rather go with some crackers, snacks, pretzels, you know these brown snacky things. A handful of them is enough. Those salt tablets are for emergency, not for regular use.

Jerky should be fine as long as you have enough water to go with it. If you eat it without anything to drink you will fuck yourself up though. Also take care of your teeth when eating it. I had this tasty jerky from the chinese store some time ago, it was made of dried mushrooms and stuck to my teeth like shit lol.

>>327240

>get some tasty cracker shit so you don't run low on salts

Is that a thing over there, or do you just mean something like saltines? Because I can think of plenty of other stuff that is bulky and has little food value that at least won't end up as crumb-dandruff in my pack. For salt I just carry salt.

And canned food is nice but doesn't go far for the weight and shape and edges digging into your back. I like >>326798 and >>326802 as a way to get plenty of meat and fat and maybe salt.

c16933 No.327290

>>327286

>saltines

Yeah, stuff like that. But it's really only a concern when sweating a lot, mostly in summer. Regular food, if it is flavoured, already has salts. If you don't drown in your own sweat, you normally don't have to worry about salts, but it's something often overlooked and can have severe drawbacks in performance if ignored.

As for carrying cans: generally I recommend cashing them outside, so you don't have to carry them. Basically like a 21st century nomad. If they hurt your back when carrying, you are not packing right. Stack them, wrap them in something and you're fine. I often throw them into the fresh clothing I take with me or put some in the outer pockets (you gotta watch your balance of course). Had no problems so far.

I am still figuring out a nice way to carry all kinds of cooking stuff with me in one package… I'm not so much a fan of plastic, even the neutral stuff. Glass is too heavy and can break. Metal… well also heavy and meh… But you should have a variety of oils and fats, spices, etc. Also learn some cooking. Mixing the right things together creates a completely different meal than just some dry ass snack. Generally, everything outside tastes glorious after a hard day with shitty weather, but being able to cook well is another skill that many people overlook.

If you are low carb, eating meat and grease and whatever animals you kill, salt is more important. At least in the short term.

Had to google that shit up. Why can't you just call it gabagool like a real person?

c16933 No.327303

>>327295

Impractical where I live. Trapping is illegal, hunting costs calories which you may or may not get out. Plus the work to prepare the game. I rather go with something I can just carry around, buy cheap in bulk and store for decades.

I actually ran the numbers on it for my country. There is a certain amount of game around, with so and so much kilograms of meat and calories. If something was going to happen (muh SHTF) you couldn't live long enough off it with a population of around 82.000.000 people and at least 2000 kcal/day. It just doesn't work. Maybe in Canada, US, etc. in more rural areas, not so in central Europe.

So neither short term nor long term I want to rely on game for food. I got more reliable sources for proteins, fats, iron, etc. and none of the drawbacks.

That cart actually looks pretty nice. Though I like to be smart and plan ahead instead of carrying tons of shit with me. Motorized that may be a different issue. The only stuff you really need with you is shelter, water and some food, plus whatever gadgets you want. Everything else I like to stash away and draw on it when I need it.

You can buy a lot of stuff real cheap and just put them in hundreds of places. Even if half of it goes bad or whatever, you still have enough. A full meal costs you like a few bucks and so you can build up a real good network of cashes that enables you to basically just walk around like a regular person but can stay outside for months on end.

Yeah, the Roman kitchen is a bit different in that regard. The Arab/Indian kitchen has way more diversity in plant foods, mostly due to the fact that the Brahmans and other folks were only allowed to eat plants and Arabs/Semites often fasted a lot.
