If it comes with the optic pictured, do it.

If not, for that price you could buy the parts and tools to build your own and end up with a better rifle (not that DMPS is bad) and a set of AR tools.

New, sub $2000 for an upper-midgrade (DPMS) 308 AR isn't horrible, but I've seen scratch build Mega MATEN builds for less, which, again, would land you with a highgrade rifle and a full set of AR tools, along with the experience of having build one from the ground up.

TL;DR, $1700 w/o optics = no-go

Fuck no. You can build one yourself for about $1,500 buying expensive parts.

Doing it cheaper might get you a rifle for $1,000-1,2000.

jesus I paid 2200$ for my lmt, you might want to look at something better or if poor get an aero for 1200 its the same level as a dpms
