if you can handle the 44 magnum, i don't see why you would rule it out. no such thing as too dead, and if it's self defense, you're probably not too worried about damaging the meat. also, in terms of energy, a 44 special is also about on-par with a 9mm, so i still say you should put that on the list as well, especially in +p.

.44 mag overpenetration is an issue if you use regular hollowpoints, but i'd imagine some of the more premium self defense rounds like pdx1 or hydra shok do a good enough job do pretty much negate that. though i do agree that it's not needed to go that heavy, OP did say "big" twice.
also, jurors are often faggots who think that a more powerful round is proof that a killing was not done in self defense. that's what happened in the case of Harold Fish. it was clearly self defense, but he was convicted because he used 10mm. retired schoolteacher without a record.

Whatever handgun calibre you'd use for shooting anybody else. Even the most dedicated roider doesn't have thick enough muscle to save his organs from a reasonable defensive round. You might have an issue with a really fat guy, but I can't imagine fat stops projectiles as quickly as other tissue, so he'd have to be really fat.

Anything more than 3-5 rounds of 9mm, 45acp or 10mm will achieve the exact same amount of deadness on the target, provided you hit what your aiming for, its normally easier for people to hit things with 9mm, which is why people suggest 9mm to new people so they have something while they develop preferences. Unless your a retard and blindly shill for whatever meme round you happen to like.
