Interest didn't die off, the moose did.
The military tried to get moose to train and breed, but they couldn't find and capture enough of them.
They were hunted to the brink of extinction when it became legal to hunt them.
Red deer, bears, and moose used to be considered property of the king, unless you were a nobleman with permission from the king, killing any of those animals was very harshly punished.
When it became legal to hunt them every peasant with a weapon went hunting them in the most unsportsmanlike way they could.
The moose population was devastated and it was again made illegal to hunt moose, it took almost a century for the population to recover.
By then the idea of sustainable hunting was getting popular, even with the peasants, so the moose were not hunted nearly as hard.
Many of the cruelest and most effective hunting methods were also banned.
Moose are now farmed commercially on a small scale and if they are raised by humans they are docile and friendly enough to ride, even if you can't train them nearly as easily as horses.

I know the Evenks/Evenki tribe (some mongol-looking nomads from Russia and China) pretty much have reindeers for everything (milk, transportation, meat, clothes and so on), but they don't seem to have tamed moose and they do have those over there too. Maybe the animal is just too stubborn and big to be domesticated consistently.

The saami people here have reindeer too.
Reindeer can be used to pull carts and sleds, but they aren't strong enough to ride unless you're very small and light.
They're hardy animals, they can survive with very little to eat, and they rarely get sick.
They seem to be relatively unafraid too, at least as long as they're not alone.
