when the Marines picked the HK IAR over all the real IAR entries I guessed the whole thing was a political move to get not-M4s in to the Marines… nope gonna use it as a SAW, Marines doing Marine things.

>>334893

>Why is M27 bad exactly?

The gun itself isn't bad but the "IAR" is just a newer version of the LSW, and anybody who has used one will tell you that it is unnecessarily heavy, impractical and way worse at being a machine gun than any actual machine gun.

The only thing it's actually good at is when in defense in a static position and you don't have an actual machine gun. And even there the only good parts of it are the longer barrel and bipod, one of which you can just buy and put on your own gun.

>>334903

The danish army has used a 7.62 MG3 as a single manned LMG for like 50 years. It's insanely heavy and a single deployment will fuck up your bones, but it's great in a firefight. The new M60E6 is even better. Easy single shots, disintegrating belts and way lighter. Only downside is that compared to the MG3 it's a bitch to disassemble and reassemble.

6467b2 No.334947

>>334903

The russians are actually replacing their RPK with PKP on many roles (including assault front units), they even made some ultra lightweight versions specifically for that

>>334911

I don't think the IAR is supposed to be used with drum (which was the dumbest part about the support M16 that spawned here and there). I believe this is mostly a change on their approach to combat, just long range support and having them working with some other unit when actual support is needed. That's just a guess. Among other shit, the IAR has a free-floated thicker barrel and some argue that the stupid piston system HK shoved into an AR handles continuos fire better than the original stoner "DI". Can't really attest or deny that, I always thought the AR action wasn't suited for continuos fire, but some videos seem to prove the opposite.

Back on topic, the newer HK stocks are convex and so is the new butt-end on the "new" tavor (X-95). As a matter of fact, most designers are going convex. I have very little experience with rifles having only fired some bolt action ones (and not even that many), but convex seems better to me.

54b415 No.335140

My main gripe with it is that it's replacing a weapon that it can't match. Oh, sure it's more "accurate", but a SAW can hit at any range the M27 can hit while also having a 100rpm sustained rate of fire vs 36 for the M27, being open bolt (which helps when things get hot), and having a quick-change barrel for when things get really, really hot.

The SAW is built for the job, the M27 is not. Grunts love it because they don't have to carry a 17lb gun all over the place plus the ammo, but that doesn't make it a good replacement. If anything, it just replicates functionality with the muhreen equivalent of the EBR, which I'm fine with, other than the fact that the M27 still uses fucking 5.56 vs the bigger round on the EBR.

Really, M27 is just shit except for the fact that it's lighter. The claim that well aimed shots are equivalent to three shots from a SAW is not only ridiculous, it ignores the fact that you can aim your shots with a SAW. The two are not mutually exclusive. You can hit a lot of things with the SAW, out to 800m if you know how to use it.

This is like the BAR all over again.

>>334893

it fills a weird niche and I'm not sure the Marines even know what they want out of it. they wanted something lighter than a SAW to use in modern urban ops.

the closest analogous would be the BAR, which is not a LMG but an "automatic rifle"

>>335140

which makes it weirder they didn't pick the other IAR submissions, any of the real IARs. any of the other options were better than the 416, even the Colt.

the Ultimax 100Mk5 and the FN IAR are fantastic.

Dude, that's just the Marines. They are always trying to be special snowflakes. I mean, did you look at MARPAT? They actually put the EGA on that shit. It's part of the pattern. The RAT boots? EGA as well, but they get a pass because they're seriously good.

The Army, meanwhile is working on pic related. It weighs almost the same as the M27, and is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt-fed, automatic weapon that fires from the open-bolt, you know, a fucking SAW.

b6dc70 No.335675

most militaries have medium machineguns as a team element and not a part of maneuvering squads. full power cartridges add A LOT of weight, but the reduced maneuvering is made up for in range, lots of range. LMGs to squads, MMGs to weapons elements is the best solution.
