1) Acquire treadmill or elliptical. Check Craigslist.

2) Place in front of TV. Turn on Battlestar Galactica.

3) Put on your 75# ALICE pack bug out bag and other tacticool gear. Carry rifle. Replace Mountain Dew with water bottle.

> But anon, it's too hot!

Then put on a fan. Your gear won't be easier when you need it.

> But anon, it's too heavy!

Then maybe a steel entrenchment tool and 500 rounds isn't realistic kit. Figure out what you don't need.

> But anon, the straps hurt and flap everywhere

Then buy a better bag and cut/tape excess straps for a better fit.

> But anon, my drop-leg holster is slapping me

Then ditch the drop leg garbage, buy a proper holster and adjust it.

> But anon, I'm fat!

Keep it up, you won't be.

What are your other workout suggestions?

Lift weights, get stronk, but never neglect a decent cardio base. It doesn't matter if you can dead lift 500 lbs if you can't carry 50 lbs across 5 miles.

I wouldn't rely on index shifters or hydraulic disc brakes in a SHTF scenario. Friction and rim brakes are easier to maintain in my opinion.

Surly makes good bikes though tbf.

If I owned some land I'd definitely have an exercise program involving running around with heavy old rifles, stabbing dummies with bayonets, and trying to shoot at targets while out of breath. *SIGH* one day……

Treadmills are cardio bro, they REDUCE muscle.

Get a set of weights, pump iron while watching TV if you must.

Really important to get a durable set of gears on a bike if you plan on putting some miles on it. I had to take a bike to work for some time last summer because my car was in the shop and I wore out the high gears from 3-7 down to 3-5. Also that bag on the front would probably make steering really awkward.

I used to do parkour for like 4 months before I broke my collar bone doing it, and I can verify with 100% certainty that it is indeed, that much more fun, despite it being hard as ever loving shit.

Do SS or 5X5 SL and cardio on the side.

Watch your macros and count your calories.

You won't innovate on exercise, if you don't want to be a lanklet/manlet you gotta lift.

You shouldn't be wearing through a cassette/freewheel in one season, even if it's bottom of the barrel parts like Shimano Tourney trash. Bike drivetrains need a lot more regular maintenance than cars, which a lot of people fail to provide. My 9 speed Shimano cassette was about $28 from Amazon, and it's lasted over 2k miles with no problems. Regularly oiling and cleaning the chain, along with scrubbing off the grit from the gear teeth is all you really need to do.

As for handlebar bags, the one on that Surly doesn't look like it was made to hold heavy loads since it's only attached to the handlebars and possibly riser. Load-bearing front bags nearly always necessitate a front rack as well, but even then you're limited to ~20 lbs depending on what manufacturer you go with. As for how much that impacts handling, there's a whole can of worms regarding trail geometry and how much that may or may not impact front loaded steering.

If shtf, I'd honestly pick non hydraulic disc brakes and stock up on lube. Rim brakes will wear out fast hard if your wheels lose true and can cripple your movement. Depending on area I'd rather have a fatbike to have utility in snow.

As another anon said, you maintin your shit, it lasts. Where i work we've had bikes that are still on the original freewheels from the 70s

I did not expect to go on k today to talk about bike maintenance

I build my wheels, so keeping them straight isn't too much of a concern for me. Rim brakes do cause more wear and tear on the rims themselves, but for that to go on long enough to have any effect without a replacement available we're talking ITEOTWAWKI instead of SHTF. A fatbike would be cool, but I live in south burger where snow isn't a problem, so touring bike is fine.

Free weights in garage, ruck on weekends. Keeps me in shape for the most part.

Running is pretty fun (inb4 third-world criminal), especially stair running or climbing, fuck it. I've been thinking in running with my 8kg barbell bar. Should i do it? It's about twice the weight of a delicious FAL the one i shall never have.

fat-bikes suck to ride any distance on the road. more tire = more rolling resistance.

Personally, I'd pick a decent steel cyclocross bike. If you're on a road you'll make better time, with still pretty decent offroad ability. I woudln't bother with a mountain bike until I got to the point where I'm doing much more offroad than on, at which point go straight to full suspension so you can keep your ass in the saddle and concentrate on peddling to make time, otherwise its just not worth it.

I might look at something like a Strumley-Archer hub gear for durability (or even just a single speed with two cogs, one on each side of your hub in a "flip-flop" arrangement) The Rohloff hub gears are nice, but they're a bit fragile, the more gears you try to cram in them the more this tends to be true.

I might also look at S-A drum brakes. They last a long time without near so much maintenance as any type of rim grabber or disc. I would take a cantilever over a disc though.

Other than that, if you build for strength (especially in the wheels) and not lightness, you can get some surprisingly bulletproof components.

If you have woods, take a nature hike with your innawoods set. Overload your bug-out bag, take a full load of ammo with your weapons, and take an endurance hike.

Also, get into the habit of working out a couple times a week, and when you're in the habit, buy a gym membership.

Here we can delve into whether /k/ is a topic or a community. I prefer the latter, seeing this board as a collection of gun enthusiasts who may enjoy discussing other practical topics that aren't entirely gun-related from time to time. Limiting discussion on /k/ to only encompass firearms limits discourse among the users, but there is a threshold of how far off-topic threads may be before this is no longer a gun-centric board. That's ultimately decided by the community in choosing which threads receive replies and which ones do not.
